get your self a big cast iron dutch oven without any linings (one of those old fashioned camper stoves will work) you can use it as a type of oven on the stove top if you can find a metal rack to put on the bottom to keep your glass container from being in direct contact with the heat source.

It's certainly not perfect, but it produces a great place to heat things up in if you don't want to use or don't have an oven, plus it stays warmer longer, just use an electronic oven temp monitor to find out how hot it is in there.

paint it a graphic colour and move that table further out instead of tucked away behind the support..

You might also want to consider changing some of the colours being used, it's a very industrial place, bold statements can work in that sort of space.

The bees wax and oil combo is good however, I'd recommend oiling the block first with an oil that wont go rancid (few suggestions already) and then using the wax, the wax is good for maintenance purposes, it will help protect the wood from drying, staining, so forth but the oil is what really does the work in getting the wood protected.

After the sanding/scraping (I recommend scraping personally, it adds a very nice charm to the wood when done properly and doesn't require any sanding) then applying a thick coat of oil and allowing it to sit for about 10 - 20 minutes (depends on the oil you use) then using clean clothes wipe up the excess, then give it a really good buff with another clean cloth to just absorb any extra.
Allow the board to sit over night (24 hours is better) then apply the wax it will produce a butchers block with more protection for the longer term and will maintain a nicer "look" as it ages.

Then every 6 months to a year, really clean down the block personally I use a tiny drop of dishwashing liquid, a whole heap of lemon juice and rock salt, scrub it down with a stiff brush, then oil it again, apply the wax and reapply the wax ever 2 to 3 weeks.

My Granddad was a butcher and this is what he used to do at the store and at home, eventually he got to old to look after his block properly so I used to do it for him, the thing was over 90 years old and was 5 inches thick, it looked old, well loved and well cared for.

I've a massive stack of microfiber towels which I know, not massively great for the environment BUT, they reduce how much cleaner I have to use and on many things I don't need a cleaner at all, such as light oil splatters on the counter wipe up clean with nothing but water.

These go into the washing machine with everything else, come out perfectly clean, are line dried and the original microfiber towel I brought 5 years ago still looks and works exactly the same as newer ones.

The only problem is they can be a little more effort to get a fresh one wet, but once wet they absorb water, cleaner, oil, dirt easily, rinse easily and they can remove things from say scratched enameled surfaces with ease, never had that happen with any cleaner strong of gentle that didn't require a bit of elbow grease and don't even get me started on cleaning the bathroom shower glass, I live in an area with incredibly hard water, shower has to be cleaned every 2 - 3 days otherwise it looks like fogged glass, little bit of vinegar and it's spotless!

Leave the door open when you are done washing.

Having a small amount of clean water left in a dispenser shouldn't cause problems especially if you frequently use the machine.

Keeping the washing machine clean as the first poster mentioned with a wash every now and then with vinegar and also hydrogen peroxide.

You shouldn't experience mildew smells if you leave the door open, I haven't experienced any mildew problems in my front loader and I've had it about 3 years.

while I understand the desire for things to look pretty, I do have the same desire and I even like the unique idea displayed here, however, that tv, looks about head height to me when I'm standing and I"m 6'2.

These flat panel screens are being mounted higher and higher, lets just get it over with and mount the damned things on the ceiling!

Optimal viewing is for the center of the screen to be inline with your eyes at viewing position (ie, sitting)..

Once again, love the idea, but the tv, it's not a piece of artwork, bring it down lower.

the format apple use AAC can be played on any device capable of playing MP3 music, unless you've an incredibly old MP3 player.

AAC is an open format, supported by Sony (PS3, walkman, SonyEricsson phones) Nokia, Wii and so on and so on and so on.

Hell even the cheap chinese knock off's these days support AAC format.

The only reason people know about AAC these days is because of iTunes.

iTunes doesn't support FLAC however it does support WAV files which can easily do CD quality and better.

People shouldn't make half arsed comments when they don't know what they are talking about.

to those who are talking about linseed combusting..

when linseed is exposed to the air it starts to oxidize and the process is exothermic, once the process is completed the stuff is completely safe (but not flame resistant)

The reason the rags can catch fire is when enough rags are moist with the stuff and they are bunched together they can get hot enough to start burning (the VOC's are what catch in the heat).. the recommended action after using linseed and other oils which oxidize is to place them in a water filled metal bucket until they can be disposed of safely or I leave each cloth in the sun for a few hours to dry and then keep them separate until the process has finished.

Lousie, fortunately it wasn't because you breathed it in, linseed has highly volatile compounds in it to keep the oil in suspension, when you start working with it, it will evaporate and take some oil with it and settle into all sorts of places including hair, unfortunately, once its in there, you're pretty much stuffed and you have to wait until the smell dissipates completely (approximately 3 days)

Linseed is about as dangerous as any other sealing product, when you stop and read the instructions and follow them and don't make assumptions about how they are suppose to be used.

no, one person unplugging a device wont do shit..
one million people unplugging a device will actually accomplish something.

Will it change the world

Most certainly not.

But it will change people, it will reinforce a habit, an idea and hopefully a desire to do things that will enact change in our self's and those around us.

by people thinking "I'll unplug that" will also help them maintain a constant idea to be mindful of everything they do, I wont turn that on, I don't really need that, maybe it can last longer.

I hate this "thing" that is thrown about, that, your small daily acts will accomplish nothing.. its thrown about by those who are to lazy or to selfish to bother doing anything and they don't want to see anyone else doing it as well because they don't want to be reminded of there own selfish lazy attitude.

They want someone else to fix the problem.

But you know what, if we all out everything we can including the tiniest thing, it will eventually over the course of our life have an effect, indeed it is small and by its self is like a grain of sand, you wont feel it, but you would feel millions of them.

the thing that strikes me is, did you agree to the mans request initially? as rude as it was to ask such a thing when he could park infront of his own house, I think it a lot ruder to have agreed and then fallen back on that agreement

If you stated no, or, asked why he couldn't park else where and had problems I'd understand.

not being american, I've no real opinion either way, although, its a healthy snack and he should be applauded for it..

However, its very humanising to see all of this coming out, if anything, it makes him appear all that much more interesting when these simple details are allowed to become known..

I for one find the Obama's a far more interesting family to read about then ever I was in anything about the Bush family.

I don't know what you guys call it over there, but, I use this stuff that i clean my stainless steal frying pan with, its this power stuff that you put on it and then scrub with a damp cloth.. using it on stainless steal makes the cloth go black but on the glass it just removed the gunk, it also works well on the racks and everything else too, bit more difficult in the actual oven though, especially the back wall.

we are a little confused by the fact that the lanterns require a AAA rechargeable battery

Lets look at this for a moment..
a solar lantern turns on when? why would the solar panels not work at that time? since the answer to those two are obvious now, why would you need a rechargeable battery?

Bingo!

ok, excuse me for a second, but, how is the gesture control better then a remote?

Its nifty yeah, its also sorta pretty too, Hell, I wouldn't reject it, but, it seems like a gimmick since it looks like it takes more effort to turn it down and up with just the gesture
