Before you commit to cookware, it's important to know how much you cook. If the answer is a lot! Or, you plan to learn! Then don't waste your money on this kind of cheap cookware.

Yet, two vital cook pieces in my arsenal were, in fact, not expensive: a cast iron skillet and an enamel-coated dutch oven; both were from Target for about $35.

That is a fantastic and inspiring way to treat wood paneling. The final outcome is better than the sum of its parts. Great idea!

@Kate (NC): When a Sazerac is made properly and the Herbsaint does only "rinse" the glass before excess is dumped out, there is no overpowering liquorice flavor. I'm not a fan of liquorice either and a Sazerac is one of my favorite cocktails. Absolutely more then the sum of it's parts.

Thanks so much for posting this. I know it's going on two years since the last comment on this post, but I've been referring to it for a while! A former rice-cooker-user, I've been cooking the grains on the stove since the cooker broke. Thanks to you, the rice is great every time and we've no need of purchasing another cooker. Cheers.

I really dig the idea of doing a small guest powder room with vibrant wallpaper!

Aah, it's happening right now. The Landlord upstairs has two entirely inconsiderate sons. The older one yells bloody murder at his mother when no one else is around. She's a timid thing, so she'll do what he asks her to (like running down to his car to fetch his cell phone) but only after he screeches at her for a half hour about how he "doesn't care about this house!" and "Mom! Mom! Where is my shirt!" and "Mom! Mom! You're making me late for work!" and "Mom! Mom! Mom! Go get my phone!"

The other son every afternoon takes delight in revving his car and drag-racing up and down the driveway while playing thumping music at a high volume. It doesn't last long, but he does it because it irks his father, who will yell from the second story to "Shut that sh*t off!!".

These two boys are 30+ years old and aren't moving out any time soon.

I'm digging thorndale's idea - a narrow and tall storage system that is half as wide as the current table, closer to the window than the door.

Wow! In general, I am not a fan of the open-plan kitchen-living room (which I am inferring from the first photo), but boy howdy, does that dark colored, recessed bar plus the dark counter top make for a demarcated space. Lovely!

Spot-on, Sarah!! I get really irritated by CL photographs that don't show anything: blurry, dark, bad angles, etc.. The effort is there, but what the hell am I looking at??

Whichever color I prefer is immaterial; the point is that a coat of paint can radically alter one's environment. And if one doesn't like, or gets bored with the results, just clean the roller and do it again!

The kitchen reminds me of "Bewitched". And I'm liking the blue ceiling that coordinates with the rest of the Asian-inspired bedroom. Lovely.

Unfortunately, what was said above about bedbugs is sadly true - it's not hype or "whatever people rave about now". Bedbugs are a serious issue in the Northeast. So for folks up here, we touch nothing with a cushion or fabric.

We're lucky to live in a college town. August 31 is coming up, the *best* time of the year to cruise the curbs. It's remarkable, the lovely things people throw out!

(Awesome, more spam above.)

Re: prints vs. "real art" - first, there are so many young, talented artists in any community who sell originals for less than established artists. So it's possible to collect "real paintings" on a budget. Second, if it's a print, and you like it - go for it.

Spend the money on a framing job that will elevate any artwork. Heck, vintage advertising posters aren't "original art" - and with the right frame, these posters become centerpieces.
