A "collector look"? That doesn't even make sense. I'm all for collecting things you like, but to buy a bunch of things to look like you collect them? Why not just start an honest collection of something that interests you? That way when people ask you about the origin or details of an object you don't have to make things up. When did our homes become so superficial??

I love the idea of the milk in a smaller container..funny how that never occurred to me. We get regular gallons, but they're too heavy. My alternate to the table pad is keeping my Bjursta table for now. I so much want a really nice dining table, but that space is used for everything: homework, crafts, every day dinners.

My holiday decorating had always been somewhat restrained and low-key - lots of muted colors and natural materials. But now that we have a young son, I call our house a technicolor Christmas! Kids go crazy for that stuff and it's a fun way to offset the doldrums of short/cold days. It's only a few weeks out of the year, why not get a little crazy? Now, back to building my tabletop Christmas village...

About the "looks like a catalog" comment: when you think about it, everyone's stuff has to come from somewhere and we don't all have the time or access to find unique items at flea markets or vintage stores. So, catalog is shopping is the source. I don't see anything wrong with furnishing your entire place from catalogs. However, when the person viewing the photos can name the catalog that every piece came from, perhaps they need to find something else to do with their time than reading catalogs.

I just scored a Room and Board Parsons coffee table today on craigslist. I also got a job through it that helped me start a new career. Good for finding kids bikes, too.
