Not sure what codes in your area allow, but typically to be considered a bedroom, a window for egress is required. Many architects will work on an hourly basis, and I'd strongly suggest consulting with a residential architect to get an expert opinion and be sure if you do something permanent you are following local codes so you don't have any future issues when you sell the property. I like the temporary solutions that many people have suggested, since if you are concerned with resale in the future, I think your current floor plan would have greater resale value than creating smaller living space.

Quicken has helped us significantly. We do not pay any bills online or anything, but it helps us track epenses, reconcile bank statements, and reminds us to pay bills. It's great.....my husband is really not a financial person, but he likes it too. Once a week we input all our receipts and once a month we reconcile with our bank statements (old school but we dont want to connect the quicken to our online banking accounts since we are paranoid). Everything has a category so we can track our monthly spending on a pie chart...and it reminds you to pay your bills on time. Another tip is that we don't believe in credit cards...just student loans...lol :c)

I got a 9x12 rug for my stepdaughter's room 2 years ago, and the rug has held up perfectly and still looks brand new...and it was super cheap compared to everything else I looked at....my dog digs on wool rugs or anything with a high pile and then eats the generated fluff (don't ask), but she never dug on this one because it isn't super fluffy. Definitely get a rug pad, as the larger rugs tend to slide around a bit. The rug was about the same price as the similar sized olefin and artificial material ones I was looking at, but this one was cotton (which I like because I've bought synthetic rugs that smell TERRIBLE). Got it from a retailer here in New Orleans.

This is a national company...you can search for local dealers on their site.

However, I don't know how pricey they are.

My paranoid self might worry about the security of something like mint even though logically I know it's probably safe (my mother won't even shop online because she thinks someone will "steal her identity"...at least I'm not that bad). I've been using just regular Quicken, cd installed, not online. I put in all my receipts and it takes about 5 mins every day, then I reconcile when I get my monthly (paper) bank statement. Old school, but I know it's accurate. My bf overdrew constantly, but he's been entering in his receipts once a week and has done great. It has pie charts too...and I dont have to worry about someone "stealing my identity"....lol

Not affordable stuff, but pretty close to the pic....I can't sew either. Try these for pre-made floral designs:

Ok. I didn't create this mess...but we live in a 150 year old house and when (after only living there for a few weeks) our hot water heater broke, we had to remove the old one and get a plumber to install a new one (landlord was out of town)....when we removed the old hot water heater we found a defunct rat nest underneath...complete with a 1950's looking package of rat poison someone had just tossed down there at some point...gross. With the plumbers waiting behind us (not helping of course), we had to get gloves, throw the entire nest into garbage bags, vaccuum up the remants with our vaccuum attachment, and then pour disinfectant on the floor.

This is not related to home repair or decorating, but I got a Puppies for Dummies book when I got my new puppy, and it was amazing. There's no way I'd have such a good dog now if not for that book....probably mostly common sense stuff, but for someone who has no idea what to do, it was a wonderful step by step on how to raise a dog.

Here's a link to something VERY similar to the Bow Haus crate but at a cheaper price (I think they are in the 200-300 dollar range...while the bowhaus was 400-500 I think.

They have some with wooden tops too...unfortunately this is out of my price range as well...but I thought I'd pass it on.

I think your place is adorable. I am tired of comments like melanieyellow's above...the prizes for winning contests like these are almost always gift certificates to buy NEW furniture and design pieces....it's ridiculous to REQUIRE that all the entrants have perfect modern homes filled with pricey modern furniture, especially if this is their first apartment. This is not the "Who has the most Eames chairs" contest. She used color to transform her space. That's the point.

Kate--

I was looking for a rug for a children's room recently and came across Dash and Albert (www.dashandalbert.com) at a local showroom. I got a striped 100% cotton hand loomed rug. No smells at all, as it has no backing. I have really bad sinuses and allergies and live in a super humid area, so I would notice if it had any chemicals/smells etc. It is easy to clean and the small sizes are washable in soap and water. The only thing is that they are thin and not plush (which is what I was looking for as my dog digs on thicker wool rugs) I put a rug pad underneath and it has been perfectly fine. My 9x12 rug cost me a little over 300 bucks from a local retailer.

Good Questions: My Rug Smells!?!

Bedbugs are terrifying....I had no idea that they were so difficult to get rid of, and my thoughts go out Amanda....as far as mosquitos, try buying a mosquito canopy. It hangs from hooks on the ceiling at four points and is completely enclosed...totally worth it....no bites in almost a year and we have TONS of mosquitos here in New Orleans. I got mine, the (Mombasa Majesty Functional 4 point) from buyhammocks.com.
