My husband and I recently had a vintage sofa from the 1950's reupholstered. We're recent college grads and couldn't afford a really expensive sofa. Our upholsterer was able to make any repairs the frame needed. It ended up costing us around $800 for EVERYTHING, even replacing foam. The piece is solid construction and will last for many, many years. I think it's a nice compromise between purchasing a cheap sofa that will need to be replaced in a few years and purchasing a designer sofa that I'll feel guilty about wanting to replace (because, let's face it, styles change and I'm going to want a new sofa eventually). When we do eventually replace this sofa, it will still be good quality and we can hand it down to someone else.

I would definitely paint them! Adding a curtain and counter would just make the space more of a chore than doing laundry already tends to be. Since they're not front-load, a counter would impede the opening of the washer and make it very hard to use the controls on the top. By adding a curtain, you'd still see the tops of the appliances which would make it obvious that you were trying to hide them away.

Like Gooddog, I think pushing them to one side would throw off the balance of the area. Instead, I would build a little countertop between the two appliances, with a panel in the front to resemble a built-in cabinet. Paint the faux-cabinet to match the other cabinetry and it'll look like it's always been there. That little bit of counter space would also make the whole area another workspace for folding, food prep, etc. I would paint the appliances a fun color (maybe the pretty blue of your vintage cart). They'll look intentional, not like you're trying to hide them. Look to Big Chill for inspiration on brightly-hued appliances!

I'm with the other posters, stick with classic. Classic doesn't mean drab though! You can still go with bright colors and patterns (I like jennysilentg's idea of royal blue) to keep it lively. Get creative with the accessories! But please, stay away from earth-toned tapestry or damask-style fabrics. It'll look outdated and dull.

My mother runs a school for historic preservation, and her instructors (professors, scientists, and professionals from around the world) told her that the magic erasers actually act as a very, very fine sandpaper. They work so well because they "sand" the top later off, which is usually the stain. It shouldn't be used on valuable items or surfaces.

I have a very similar house. I just painted mine Sherwin Williams' Roycroft Bronze Green with Classic Light Buff trim. I've got a charming vintage patio set that's painted yellow and I planted yellow flowers in my planter boxes. It looks gorgeous.

I agree with k1tsun3. I'm usually all about painting furniture, but these have got such character. They have a very chic, world-traveled look about them. I would recover the seat if anything.

I've used this product in clients' homes. One thing that's nice about it is that while it is a hard surface, it's not quite as cold underfoot as a real ceramic or porcelain tile. It's also not going to crack if something heavy is dropped on it the way ceramic could.

If you know who manufactured the cabinets or can find some that match the door style and finish, I would add a second row of cabinetry above with some crown moulding along the top. Stacked cabinetry is a very classic look and is quite popular these days. Your cabinets would then extend to the ceiling, nearly doubling your storage and giving you a much more custom look.

Cellular shades are also quite energy efficient as they insulate the windows. Who can't use a little extra insulation? :)

I am also in the custom window treatment business. For what you're looking for I would really recommend a semi-opaque cellular shade. I would actually divide it into two shades for your large window. Hunter Douglas has some great fabrics. They let light in, but block out any possibility of people seeing in. They come in top-down bottom-up which is a great feature for a living room. To make the window look more custom, I would then add pinch-pleat panels on either side and an upholstered cornice in the same fabric as the panels.

My Australian cattle dog likes lounging on my faux Eames lounge chair. I know I should make her get down, but she's so content there.

If you're hell-bent on carpet, I would at least go with a commercial-grade with a rubber backing. They're designed to handle a little more "yuck" than the standard residential carpet.

Thanks everyone! This was a fun project that my grandmother and I were able to do together in one day. When making the cushion, I pretty much did as veslabeachgirl recommended.

I do have one tip for stuffing the cushion into the cover (which is a headache). I first put the cushion inside a snug-fitting plastic bag, then slid the two inside the cover. The bag cuts down on the friction between the two fabrics rubbing against each other. When the cushion was completely in, I simply pulled the plastic bag out!

Thanks to everyone so far. It breaks my little heart that the ideal fabric is so expensive. Do you guys think that the Kalah Spice would be a good replacement? I also found a fabric at Joann Fabrics that is not an Ikat, but has similar colors.

What do you think?

I would highly recomment using Sherwin Williams' Color Visualizer. It's pretty realistic and takes a lot of guess work out of chosing paint colors.
