They're silkworm cocoons- what the silkworm leaves behind when it goes on to live its life. Brandon Nelson - the Proprietor has an amazing eye- and is a nice fella as well. His store is a "must" stop for quite a few Interior Designers and Decorators I know in Chicagoland. American Barn is IN Chicago- near Wrigley Field. Another great source is Bruce Horigan- who sells Urban Timber Wood- wood from trees felled within the Urban Forest- and kiln dries it to a proper moisture content. I wrote about his company on my blog. http://materialsandservices.blogspot.com/ www.horiganufp.com and, my favorite supplier of Industrial reclaimed Timbers- is in Sycamore, Il- close to Dekalb- J.M. Hoffman Company 630.215.7930 m. John salvages wood from pre-Industrial buildings- beams range in size- and can be resawn given his huge bandsaw. A wonderful find. Call Alberto Sanchez- he's awesome. He's a little outta the way but he can come and take a look to give you an estimate. It helps if you speak Spanish- but he's fully fluent. Along with the Gesso suggestion- rather than covering ALL of the glass- maybe a stencil.... of say- Lace? or some other cut out pattern (VERY thin sheets (20 gauge) of perforated steel?) could be used to create as a stencil, for a Patterned effect thats translucent. Dear Randolh, Alejandro and Jeanna- Please ignore the previous 8 comments- Jealousy is "such" an ugly emotion..... Your home is great- I love the colors and the textural mixes- the old "Bomber jacket" leather sofa, combined with the Baltic Birch Cabinet/Bookshelf, and the nubby/nappy footstools..... Many, many years ago- a popular Soho bar call- "merc bar", had a "Lodge-meets-Loft" style decor, exposed brick walls, timbers, large scale B & W photos of the West- and a Canoe Light fixture hanging above the barStools- I believe "wrapped" in Parchment....a great idea then as it is today....... The interviews were shown at The Cultural Center here in a Chicago, a few years back- all I could keep thinking of as I was watching FLW was "The Fountainhead"! Plus- they're SMOKING! It's so "odd" to watch Vintage TV- and see the interviewers puffing away....and cut to a Cigarette commercial! the ICFF has changed soooooo much. Initially, it was a showcase for small, independent MAKERS/Designers of Furniture. Now- there's as many Tzchokie (candlestick holders, alarm-clocks, fly swatters, toilet brushes, etc..) Vendors & MEGA Furniture Companies there - as well as companies like "flor" by Interface, that may have nice products- but WHAT do they have to do with FURNITURE??? The George Little Management Company has lost its way. They need to go back to their roots. Why? There IS really no other venue for emerging talent (Furniture Design). There's the Fine Furniture and Furnishings Show in Milwaukee and Providence, RI. There's The American Craft Exposition Show in Evanston,Il every August- but these shows tend to highlight the skills of say a WoodWorker, and his/her wood selection/joinery skills - an entirely different thrust- than a small inventor/entrepreneur- wanting to find a WORLDWIDE audience of his or her own Product. I walked by it @ The KBIS show- backtracked- took a 2nd look- immediately HAD to touch it, felt smooth, technical almost, but wasn't that "warmed" by it..... I was compelled to grab a Marketing brochure for it (WHICH-I resisted prior to that-during the whole show- preferring to snap digitals, and take Business Cards/be scanned...) but- in looking at the design on the Shuttle Bus back Downtown- felt that the maneuverability/articulation and the great textural/Visual patterning aspect were THE only things it had going for it- which to me- in summation- wasn't enough to keep the Marketing Brochure, which I deposited smartly into a Recycling bin....
