Hahahaha... I agree these are unrealistic but great to look at. Anyone I know with a home and kids and pets has their laundry room/mud room floors littered with sports equipment, winter coats, dog beds and toys... etc. etc... I guess they'd need another room to store all those things. My laundry room is the Chinese place around the block.

Where did the fireplace in the living room come from? It doesn't look like it was there in the initial photo- or was it behind the grandfather clock?

Hey Amanda, how are you finding life in Providence after NYC? The city has really cleaned itself up in the last dozen years and the local arts have definitely evolved and being close to some nice beaches in the summer is fun, but sometimes it can feel a little too local...

There really are some beautiful homes in Providence, and even a lot that haven't been updated in decades and ready for a little refurbishing. And the city itself is beautiful, with great schools... But the economy is very tough there- the 2nd highest unemployment in the country!

To all of you who say, ask McDonalds to change, you're crazy. They won't even make change for the parking meters on 1st Avenue.

That Mickey D's has been there forever so I doubt there's any chance they'll change a thing. Or that the landlord would. I agree with the others, it's probably why you were able to afford it just out of college. And you can't live with scented candles all the time...

Do you cook? I find cooking in a small apartment always leaves a smell, sometimes the nice warm smell of food (not mussels, though!). Fight food with food.

Take him to one of those places with a huge brown club chair selection and let him know he can move on to new furnishings without breaking with the past. Other than that, throw it out when he's not looking and tell him it was stolen.

I say put it in the basement or the garage if you can, and if not, the Salvation Army. It looks worn and possibly gross and designing a room around it- well, I'm afraid to think what the results there could mean.

That is, if you can afford a new couch and everything that comes next. It's a tough time right now to find the money to redo a whole room. On the other hand, you could lay out your room with new stuff regardless of the couch- design your space without that brown thing in mind and get rid of the couch last.

Ummm... most of Florida is covered in white wall to wall carpeting. I'm not quite sure how they pull it off.

If I had the money, I'd live in an enormous compound on hundreds of private acres surrounded by giant stone walls so I see nothing wrong with this place.

In terms of sofa fabric, I guess that's why vinyl was so popular when it was... I'm surprised there isn't more furniture covered in ultraleather- it's like ultrasuede, but faux leather that's very, very soft and durable. It's also easy to clean.

Yes, it's interesting to think of these interiors in context of their surroundings. In suburbia, I'd want something to break out of conformity, in the woods, I'd want a place that interacts with nature. A place with a view is often designed around the windows. In a wild city, you need escape and refuge.

This is a beautiful but difficult space. The long brick wall overwhelms it and the big bright windows on one end makes the other end very, very dark. It's not easy decorating a place like this.

Yes, Lady J, it's a shame so many Manhattan apartments have lost architectural details like these.

Ah, Dy Kelly, I missed out on that new trend! Scary! I'd be afraid of people hitting their heads or leaning against artwork when it's so low... What was the old rule? All the tops should be 5 feet above the floor or they should all be on the same horizontal line? I forget. I like it high, especially when it's expensive.

Nice job with the bedroom. I couldn't live in a place like this, it would be too difficult for a messy person like me to keep clean with the things everywhere.
