Hit it with a hammer. Problem solved.

Just kidding. But, in the twelve years that I've been living in apartments vs. single-family homes (and also renting so I can't replace/move/remove the detector), I haven't had a smoke alarm that I *didn't* want to hit with a hammer. I fail to see the utility of a detector where you have to remove the battery or take the whole thing down anytime you turn your oven on.

In my current apartment, the mute button of my detector is functionally useless, the detector is wired so it still will go off after the battery is out, AND it seems to have a battery of its own so, when you take it down, it still emits pathetic little beeps. When it goes off for no reason, I take the battery out, take the detector down, and put it in the dryer.

Someone in my office keeps bringing their unwanted, disgusting flavored tea in to "share", and it never gets used. A couple of weeks ago, I broke down and tossed out the white chocolate raspberry tea that had been sitting in the break room for years. And speaking of dumping unwanted food on coworkers, there are several candy canes in our break room that have sat there, untouched, since the beginning of the year.

If you do try to fob off your unwanted food at work, please be kind enough to throw it in the trash if no one eats it for some weeks or months.

Once, as a child, I accidentally made my eggs pretty much that way, wet and curdy and way over-beaten, for my mother's birthday. They disgusted me then as I'm sure they would disgust me now. Even the photo is gross. That's what you get when you don't stir custard constantly while it's being cooked.

My method is medium heat in a cast-iron skillet. Ideally the eggs have been beaten with cottage cheese and coarse salt. I use coconut oil, pour in the eggs and let them start to solidify on the bottom before I start scraping them off the bottom of the pan. At that point, I'll throw in some herbs or cheese if I feel like it, but only a couple of scrapes with the spatula are needed, and the result is fluffy, eggy goodness.

My bugaboo is those kitchens with black/dark gray granite and those ubiquitous deep-brown cabinets. Those kitchens always look so drab and mumsy. I'm certain they'll be considered the avocado green of the aughts.

My landlord, despite doing slap-dash "renovations" of their properties, actually did a nice job with my kitchen. It does have the dread dark gray granite, but they chose white cabinets, which make my kitchen look clean and fresh. I also like granite for the option of having the counter meet the sink seamlessly. It makes for much less scrubbing of the grime that grows in any seams or cracks in a kitchen.

Considering what renters are usually stuck with, granite is the lesser of evils.

One other tip when moving into a new apartment is to never move in before the apartment is finished. Mine was being renovated when I saw it, was supposed to be finished a week before I moved in, and unsurprisingly (in retrospect) was "finished" the day I moved in. Where "finished" meant that the malt liquor drinking stoners who rehabbed the apartment left many things undone.

I also should have taken a closer look at the filthy, stained, smelly carpet in the building's stairwell, which has only gotten more disgusting, to the point where I can smell it in my own apartment. And I shouldn't have assumed that the myriad construction junk in the garage would ever be disposed of. It's been a year and a half since they finished renovating the building, and still the junk remains.

At this point, I've given up on finding a landlord who will take care of a property half as well as I would were I an owner.

I really like the wallpaper suggestion, but just for the white part of the drawer fronts, which seem just a little boring to me. For extra symmetry, you can use the wallpaper for drawer liner as well.

It's great to stand out, but functionality is important too. I tend to lose (accidentally or by design) cards that don't fit in my card holder. Sometimes boring is the better choice.

I agree with the art recommendations, but I think it would be really interesting to find or make a piece of artwork (ideally on a stretched canvas) that fits that space perfectly.

My sister had a doorway to nowhere in her former living room. Her solution was to commission a work of art from a friend that fit the space. The doorway made an excellent frame.

I have a set of fine china I inherited from my mother. Over time, I've had to cull chipped and otherwise damaged dishes, which is mostly fine; I started out with 16 place settings. But replacements.com does not carry the dishes I have. I will have to start filling in my collection with mismatched items, especially since my china set is sorely lacking dessert and serving bowls.

For everyday eating, I've been using mismatched plates, bowls, and glasses for years. No one seems to mind.

I prefer a lower bed than a high one (I can't stand feeling like I have to literally climb into bed), but many of these are too low even for me. Ideally, I'd have a bed with enough clearance to vacuum underneath, but with no box spring and a thin enough mattress to be right at sitting height.

I pretty much refuse to have more than one kind/color of a particular cosmetic with few exceptions. I only have one color of nail polish, which I use until it's gone. Only one compact of eye shadow, with no more than three colors within (I don't know what to do with more than three). Only one tube of mascara. I make exceptions for lipstick since I need different colors for different occasions and outfits, but that's pretty much it.

I'm often bewildered when I visit other people's homes, and their bathrooms are packed to the gills with soaps, cleansers, perfumes, and cosmetics. I guess they're doing their part in keeping the beauty industry in the black.

I'm sorry, but I think most of this is absurd. I've been through a 6.9 earthquake, and the worst of it was going without electricity for a night and having to throw out some food once the lights turned back on. I'll stick to my small food/water/blanket/medical kit for my car and my stock of food and water at home. Any disaster that requires more than that will likely kill me anyway.

Being childless and therefore watching from the sidelines, it has kind of astonished me what my sister feeds her toddlers. They eat a ton of bland white meat, fruit, and baby carrots. Time doesn't seem to be the issue, since my sis will ultimately cook a separate, tastier, and more nutritionally balanced meal for her husband and herself.

Above all, I don't see how her girls are getting all the nutrients they need, but what do I know?
