very cute! Am thinking about making one for my desk. We have cutlery and dishes available at work, but it can be almost impossible to find a fork or spoon when you really need one. Especially one that is not of questionable cleanliness. Also, it would be nice to have a cloth napkin and possibly a sharp knife on hand as well.

As a crafter loving person from way back (realized last year that I've been sewing for over 20 years!) I recently found a wonderful way to thin my fabric/yarn/textile stash-- IBOLs! You can send boxes to needy individuals and sewing coops in northern Iraq. Please check out their website: http://ibol.wordpress.com/. Last year I sent 12 and I am hoping to send some more. It is better for your materials to get used than to languish in your cupboard or storage area....

I believe the middle photo is of shades that are mounted in the middle of tall windows. A true bottom mount roman shade would fold up to the place where it is mounted... which would be the bottom of the window not the middle.

I've hosted via the Couchsurfing website and they have been uniformly positive experiences. I am a single woman, so I only host women. I've done a variation of couchsurfing my entire life, often staying with the friend of a friend of a friend when I am traveling. If you are interested in an older crowd and you are a woman, you can always check out JourneyWoman or Women Welcome Women. Both sites use this idea to encourage international relationships.

I spent almost a week in Scotland with a woman that I meant through JourneyWoman's Hermail networking website and spent some quality hours with a delightful woman in Copenhangen during an 8 hr lay-over. If you think about it as a community building experience, it doesn't seem so strange.

That said, I have a long family history of hospitality to friends, soon-to-be friends and strangers, so this doesn't seem weird or scary to me.

Another note--with couchsurfing, or any other situation where you are meeting strangers and thinking of inviting them into your home, it is common practice to meet in a neutral space--online, in-person, or both--before you actually let someone into your home. This allows either party to decline if it seems like a bad fit in any way.

My partner and I are selling the car when we get back from a vacation in early Nov. We made some lifestyle changes, including changing to a local neighborhood church and re-assessing how we grocery shop (the two current major uses of the car, as we both use public transport to get to work already). We are excited about the freedom (and increased money in our pockets) that this will bring.

Another option to note is local car-sharing orgs. Here in Chicago we have Zipcar and i-go. They are great for those times when you really need more hauling space than a bus or bike can provide. If you don't have one near you, you can consider seeing if a friend or neighbor would let you barter for the occasional use of their car.

Another wonderful source (where you can go in person if you are in Chicago) is Orange Beautiful-- http://www.orangebeautiful.com/. They were highlighted in an apartment tour a few months ago and their home home was just as lovely as the store! Their cards are simple, witty and beautiful and they have been doing custom work for years. Please check them out!

Note to those looking for recipes: almost any oven or stove top recipe that requires simmering can be adapted to a crock pot. Most Crockpots cook at about 325* on high, so just adjust cooking time for baked items. My roommate and I use the crockpot all the time and find it is one of the few things that allows us to eat real meals after a long day at work.

Suggested recipes for warmer weather: any baked pasta (pasta Alfredo is a popular one with us) or casserole dish (tamale pie and enchiladas are always good), rice pilafs (on low so they don't burn), also great for "ethnic" foods like tandooris and other long-cooking recipes.

You can also rip the squares if you use cotton or another natural fiber and it is woven. Just clip and rip. Always cut the pieces just a little bit larger, as the edge gets wavy and it benefits from a slightly large hem, such as 1/4".

@LitNerd. I don't think you have to worry about your classes. Unless you have an exceedingly heavy period, you shouldn't have to empty the DivaCup more than every 8-12 hrs. I just switched to the large cup (being now over 30) and find that I can easily go from wake up to bedtime without leaking, even on my heaviest days.

I urge you to try the DivaCup. It is silicon, soft and flexible, and I love it. I've been using it for almost 6 years and would never go back.

can you make flavored yogurt this way? I really like vanilla yogurt for my granola parfaits in the morning and I already make homemade granola that is not very sweet.

If at all possible, use the email function. I prefer to start the conversation via email than call, especially when I need more information, such as measurements. I don't like giving my phone number over craigslist until I am sure that I am interested in the piece. Also, it is a pain if someone lists a number that is not their primary number and is answered by other people. There have been a few times that my messages have not gotten through. If multiple people are going to answer inquiries, please give them all the information so that they can accurately answer questions.

Do you know of anything that is made to sit on top of a stove for added room? I have a full-size stove in my little studio kitchen and a lot of the time I am using the sink for other things but my 12 x 12 counter space is not enough.

Kpaige13--if you want interesting cookbook covers, you can make covers for the books you have and take them to an office supply store (OfficeMax, etc) and have them bound. They can drill for 3 ring binders, do comb or spiral binding, etc. I've had great luck taking in traditionally bound books, having them cut the spines off and then spiral binding them. It is especially useful for cook books and other books that you need to stay open while you are looking at them.

Question--I've heard more than once the recommendation to use starch to hang fabric on the wall. I live in a rental and want to try it, but I was wondering if anyone had instructions. Also, is the process different if you are working with plaster instead of drywall, or vice-versa?

I peeked at this post because I have a print from Chapon of St. Martinique too:-) My favorite mementos are usually textiles--I buy scarves for myself and others, but I also enjoy yardage of fabrics, especially if an area is known for a particular handicraft. I have block-printed handwoven cotton from Thailand, an electric pink muumuu from the Philippines and silk scarves from Paris, just to name a few. They are easy to transport, lightweight, useful and don't take up a lot of space at home.

Another fun option that a friend and I do, especially when traveling alone, is to take "feet" pictures. It all started when she was at Omaha Beach for D-Day anniversary and didn't want a picture standing smiling... it just didn't seem right. So she wrote "Omaha Beach" in the sand and took a picture with her feet in the bottom of the frame. Since then her feet have been in many famous and/or beautiful places. As long as you keep your toenails neat or like your shoes you can have a catalog of interesting pics.

Sometimes she corrals other feet into the pics... fun and memorable

I work in the Financial District and I love walking to the garden on the south-side of the Art Institute and eating my lunch by the fountains. It is quiet and cool even though it is right off Michigan Ave.

I have found that if I don't have the fan on the shaded side of my apartment pulling cool air in while I am away at work the ambient temperature of my apartment is 5-10 degrees warmer when I come home, even if I have all the shades closed. It may not be as energy efficient, but the issue of comfort is more important to me when the summer sun starts beating down on my top-floor apartment.
