I really like what she has accomplished here considering it is, what she describes, as track housing in Las Vegas. Lovely lighting, flow, layout, and aesthetic.

I guess I would like to see Jen branch out into some vintage pieces. I think she has an amazing eye, and her aesthetic could benefit from exploring objects and furnishings from the 1920s-1970s... maybe rely less on target/west elm and more on craigslist & vegas estate sales? Just a thought, said in a completely positive, non-judgey way.

Oh... and that closet: to die for.

I am not a snob and I am not wealthy. I simply am someone who believes in fair labor but doesn't want to sound preachy. Therefore I buy used and am creative when it comes to decorating, and search for clean lines and high style at the Salvation Army. When I do buy new, I often buy items crafted in the US or by people who are paid fairly. Its more costly but ultimately worth it. And THIS is why I am against IKEA.

Also, I try to avoid personal attacks against individuals when commenting. I suggest some of you do the same.

I guess Ikea is an easy and obvious solution to the low budget/small space problem.

I look to design blogs to inspire, to tell me that high design IS attainable, that individuality and creativity transcend budget and space.

So what I am saying is yes, Ikea does fill a need, but I will not aspire to it. And I will never settle for it.

Apartment Therapy has become too commercial and too reliant on these endorsements. Truly innovative design (styles you will see copied and mass produced a la West Elm and Pbarn in a few years) are still alive and flourishing among the creative set, they are just less highlighted on this blog than they once were.

lovely room, definitely thumbs up. though my impression was identical to the opinions about the palette not correlating to the dominant colors in the photographs- what you've got going on in the actual room is better than the trio you claim is your palette.

The Victorian that the apartment was supposedly in is a must see on any Minneapolis tour. Near Lake of the Isles and not far from the stone bridge also shown in the opening credits.

By far one of the most beautifully photographed homes on Apartment Therapy. The austere color palette is so refreshing and restrained. This place is cohesive, unpretentious, and perfectly curated.

A great French shop to the west is The Careful Peach, in Oak Park's Harrison Street Arts District.

I can understand the concern expressed by Michelle, the boutique owner who felt RH is making it difficult for smaller independent boutiques to get by. The buyers and stylists for national chains, whether it be home decor or apparel, are constantly seeking their inspiration and guidance from smaller, more creative sources. When I see this post I reminded of independent boutiques here in Chicago who's inventory is comprised of salvaged and vintage furniture, leather goods, and textiles. The difference is the wares sold by these smaller places are the real thing, not some intentionally distressed, mass produced, faux wabi sabi nightmare.

The good news is small independents will always be more authentic, interesting, and cutting edge than the RHs and PBs of the world. The people who use chains as their general source for home decor will simply be enlightened by RH's new aesthetic, and the small boutiques will just have to come up with the next fantastic trends, as they always do.

For a claustrophobic person this is an absolutely terrifying post. I would rather sweat it out with the above-ground populace.

Yeah, I have to agree that West Elm's craftsmanship leaves a lot to be desired.

Oh my God. Please do NOT start covering this with fake suede & adhesive spray, foam, etc. That sounds like a tragedy waiting to happen.

The posts telling you to just spruce it up a bit are correct. It looks pretty good as is, and the vintage tile is totally appropriate to the architecture of the space. It doesn't "clash" at all. Just do some repairs to the tile and possibly paint the black with something more neutral

Great rug & furniture by the way. Keep going with what you've got, but skip the cheap cover ups. The original is much better.

PS, bepsf, triptychs ARE often hinged together. See my comment. Seems we can never agree!

bepsf,

I certainly realize this, but what I love about Scott's apartment is that he has sourced things in a way that feels organic and personal. Great designers do this for their clients as well. You misunderstood what I was referring to! To quote designer Rose Tarlow--
"There are those who spend lifetimes in houses that have nothing to do with who they really are. They may be perfectly designed, yet if they fail to reflect the personalities of those who live in them, the very essence of intimacy is missing..." for more of what I am talking about, I recommend reading her famous book, A Private House.

I will say that Scott's apartment (which I loved) had a lot more character than this project. It does feel, for lack of a better word, generic.

It feels "purchased all at once" and lacks the attention to detail that his apartment had. Thats okay if it were a corporate apartment or a traditional hotel, but not for a home. I don't see the individual in here anywhere.

I guess my first reaction was similar to Texaninexile's. If we are getting technical, the triptych was popularized in the Middle Ages with Christian iconography (often hinged, but sometimes otherwise attached), but I believe the word and method originated in Ancient Greece.

Commonly in contemporary art (and for that matter, religious art), a triptych refers to a group of three pieces that were intentionally done as a set, so they must not only relate to each other, but in some way interact with each other in a way where they do not work independently.

In other words, three pieces of art in a row does not necessarily a triptych make. That doesn't mean three similar pieces don't look great together, though. Its a great solution to achieve weight with smaller pieces if one large one doesn't work.

I agree with the first post. It isn't meant to be a high chair. In this case their may not be a way to appropriately add height without compromising the integrity of the design.

Apartment Therapy New York | Raising the Height of a Too-Low Chair? Good Questions

A 90" sofa is HUGE. Make sure you can actually fit it in your apartment (stairways, etc.) before you order it! Also, not to be negative, but most people buy furniture that is too large for their space. Just because something fits on a wall doesn't mean its the correct scale. Newer construction accommodates big furniture, but vintage apartments look funny with disproportionately large pieces. Just something to consider in case you are in a pre-1960's building.

Apartment Therapy Chicago | Chicago Sources for a Long Slipcovered Sofa? Good Questions

My best advice in terms of acquiring furniture is to invest in the highest quality case goods (dressers, sideboards, desks) and dining tables/chairs that you can afford. Whether purchased new or used, look for solid pieces with classic lines that are made well. Solid wood, dovetailing, good joinery- these elements will stand the test of time and may be your largest investment in terms of furniture. If you can't afford great new pieces, then buy used.

Spend less on upholstered pieces. They wear out faster and can be more susceptible to trends. That said, a high quality sofa frame (solid wood construction, 8 way hand tied springs, classic shape) can be reupholstered and last for generations.

And having little to no budget is not an excuse to shop at pre-fab Scandinavian furniture stores. Though it may be tempting to run to big box stores to fill our need for a dresser or nightstand, having the patience to do the necessary searching for the correct quality piece within your budget will ultimately be a better investment.
