I agree that cork wouldn't end up giving you the look you're after. The backsplash ideas are also very wise.

If you are hellbent on altering those cabinets, though...

I was also going to suggest contact paper, but think about creating a silhouette mural/design with the paper instead of just doing solid paper on the doors. Are you at all crafty? You might be able to make something really interesting and lovely (and completely cheap & removable!) with even just a solid color contact paper. It's (k)not wood has some cool uses of faux bois contact paper cut into interesting shapes against white backgrounds.

I think that the stain and pulls date this piece, but it's 100% worth saving.
If it were mine, I'd paint it a medium-high gloss, solid white, and give it some new pulls - possibly glass? I think it could look really lovely. Especially if you ordered a glass top for it to really dress it up.

as a side note... can you tell us anything about where/how you got a good deal on such a lovely rug?

In my old place, I used dozens of white/ivory pillar candles, varying heights. it was really beautiful when they were all lit, and kept the warm cozy firelit spirit.

okay, you have all inspired me.
I'm totally figuring out a way to do shelves.

...anyone want to buy some lightly used bookcases?

Thanks, everyone, for your very very enlightening feedback. (And big grateful hugs to those who like it as is!)

Lightspeed... I think I'm digging what you're saying the most. ("install uniform white bookshelves that look like they blend into the white walls" ..."Against the white shelves they will pop out like never before and become the strong focal point that they were meant to be.")

While I'm not sure I can quite create that beautiful unified shelf look (I agree it's optimal, but i have a ton of VERY heavy books and financially I can't just replace all those shelves), I *can* paint the bookcases the same white as all the woodwork and trim ... another idea I've had kicking around in my brain for a bit. I love the idea that they'll make the table/chairs really pop. And I can't shake db1974's sentiment... they are perfectly good chairs.

Please keep the comments coming, though. I truly appreciate them!

I have a version of the EINA from Ikea from a few years ago: http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/40120595
Not sure if it's low enough for you, but I had the same issue of fitting a bed in a tiny bedroom (technically mine was a closet with a window) and this worked like a charm.

That is absolutely beautiful - it's going in my style tray.

EXCEPT ... I can't get behind the single random urn on the middle of the bench. It kind of makes me giggle. Yeah... that would really last more than 10 minutes in an actual lived-in house.

I fought tooth and nail against putting clear plastic over our windows, but I have to admit: 1. It made an ENORMOUS difference in the temperature, and 2. Instead of making our place a lightless cocoon.... it actually diffused the harsh winter sunlight and made it really pretty! In our sunroom, we put up plastic and then hung matchstick blinds - you'd never even know there was plastic over the windows.

Wow. It's all beautiful, but the desk/work area is really tops, as far as I'm concerned. I feel like if I had a desk like that, I couldn't wait to sit and work at it - this gives me new resolve to make my desk a work of art that I long to be part of. Stimulating without being cluttered, lovely without looking ostentatiously 'composed' - again - WOW!

You've got a great start, so good job. I actually like the loveseat and, as someone who spent 6 years living in studios, am all for keeping a bed just for sleeping (makes it easier to shut off and relax).
My suggestions: make your dresser a little more warm/exciting by buying some cool pulls for the drawer. They won't cost much. For another few dollars, you can even buy a coordinating one for the adjacent closet door. Might help to unite it a little. Target, home depot are great for basic options.
As far as the rest of the room, have you considered any sort of a translucent neutral-colored curtain as a room divider? Maybe just for the length of the bed? I've never used one, but I've seen some gorgeous photos of some. It would be just enough to still let the light through, but still divide the space effectively.
And finally - I don't know how dearly you love the lime green table ... it's a cool piece, but it seems alone in its color saturation in an otherwise neutrally shaded room. Me, I'd toss a warm/muted color tablecloth on it.
Good luck!

they may not be as sleek and modern as you like, but I've found that thrift stores almost *always* have an ample supply of unwanted planters. (I've also rescued several from alleys.) A few coats of rustoleum makes for a really beautiful and supercheap option.

Scooping every day is definitely key. Since there's nowhere to really tuck the box out of the way, we also do a once-a-week full litter changeout.
Finally: Fresh Step with Cedar. Uses cedar's natural odor and moisture absorption and it smells like fresh cedar after scooping. I'm a big fan.

Mixed reviews on Goodreads. Sounds overall informative but preachy, based on these:

I have a chair this color - I love it with a very light ivory. The chair itself has a dark gray steel base, which I think complements it really nicely. So - uh, yeah. I echo that dude who was yelling about neutrals.

To those confused by the vodka:
The alcohol makes the solution dry more quickly, as opposed to just dousing the fabric with water. Less water spots, less chance for it to sour. Vodka also naturally absorbs odors, although I don't really know the why on it.
Costume shops are always stocked with spray bottles of cheap vodka and water as a natural, scentless Febreze. We usually just spray the armpits of our costumes when they can't be laundered daily.
Thanks for the recipe, AT! I'm definitely trying this out!

Wow, these are all immensely helpful ideas. Thanks so much to everyone! I love the mirror idea - I even have two good-sized mirrors that haven't found a home in my new place yet!
I'm now researching perennial hanging vines that can survive with partial sunlight.
Thanks, AT buddies!
