I'm in the packing part of the moving process as well and am getting more conscientious about reading before I go to bed. My brain is spinning all of the things I need to do, but reading a philosophy-based book definitely helps to pull me out of that so I can sleep. Packing/moving is all about minutia, but reading something that tries to tackle the questions of "Why are we here? What do our lives mean?" helps to keep it all in perspective.

Smitten Kitchen's Mushroom Farro Soup freezes beautifully. I made a 3x batch, poured individual serving sizes in ziploc baggies, squeezed the air out, and laid them flat in the freezer. The night before I'm bringing it for lunch, I toss a bag in the fridge, and in the morning, pour the thawed soup in a tupperware bowl and go. Takes up way less space in my freezer, and there's less air in the bag to cause freezer burn.

Whenever I hear "gluten free dessert," my mind always goes to french macarons. Not really sure how you would "cut" it, but I could see doing a croquembouche with those. om nom nom. Now I want one.

I kind of agree with akay- I think I'll stick to putting frozen fruit in my prosecco/white wine for my summer-fun cocktail.

Yep- anything that involves mixing just got a whole lot easier for you. Plus anything involving meringue. I also whip up meatloaf and the like in mine. Again- just mixing, but does in 1/4 of the time.

This is an extremely late comment to this thread but as much as I wasn't fond of the May issue, the cigarette ad in the August issue is the real indicator to me that the magazine is going in a direction that I don't like. Know your audience, Rapoport. I'm not saying nobody who reads Bon Appetit smokes, but I'd assume that those who do are few and far between and recognize that they're hurting their food experience by doing so.

Well, I guess that's just one less subscription I'll need to spend money on in the future.

I don't use mine all that often, but I definitely do for making French Macarons, and for weighing packages before mailing them. It also opens up a whole new realm of recipes that I haven't ventured into quite yet.

The thing to be careful of is to not to get pulls that extend past where they attach to the drawer. In my experience, you will invariably catch your clothing on it, creating pulls in sweaters and the like. But besides that, I agree with lynell- It's jewelry for your kitchen!

Weirdly, Jasper Hill Farm's Bayley Hazen Blue cheese with port wine cherries and a tempranillo. I have never had this at my home, but one night I had this combination and it triggered very strong and specific memories of being a child and playing in the family room on a fall evening. It very literally felt like tasting a memory.

On the other hand, a dish that makes me feel like home is turkey tetrazzini. It's my favorite way to use up the leftover thanksgiving turkey and I look forward to it at least as much as I do the holiday dinner itself.

Try using the Pam with Flour (or Pam for Baking- something like that)- I overdosed my pan with it and the cakes came out significantly better than my first try.

I've had problems finding the dried ones in NYC- when I asked the guy at Food Emporium, he said that they were a "specialty" bean not in common use, and so they didn't stock them.

Internal Monologue: "Um... yeah. So, you don't cook, huh."

Hi Joan,

Chef'n makes a scrub brush that slips onto your hand (check out thekitchn article on the Chef'n Palm Peeler: it looks like this, but is a brush rather than a peeler). Combine that with an automatic soap dispenser, perhaps?

Trader Joe's Almond Meal is definitely too coarse for something such as macarons, but I found that it worked well and tasted great in linzer tarts.
