@lucymcflea- there needs to be sufficient air flow and warmth. with the hanging plant globes its easy to take the plant out and rinse out the globe if it gets cloudy. if you're getting too much moisture make sure there's enough air getting to the plant.

if buying products made in the USA is important to you (rather than the imported CB2 versions and similar generic ones on etsy), seattle glass artist justin bagley hand blows hanging terarriums. available at http://bluejaysnbumblebees.etsy.com

www.bluejaysnbumblebees.etsy.com for hand blown plant globes made in the good ol USA (Seattle to be exact) by glass artist Justin Bagley. I will say, these are incredibly easy for the non-gardener. You just soak an air plant 1/week for a couple hours and the trade off is a beautiful, living piece of art. love these!

Love this place. Great job on the yellow. I'm not usually a fan of yellow, but perfect color choice.

i love this idea. it seems like sand might make it more comfortable to sit on the bottom. does anyone know if that would work with the filtering system?

Avimom, there are great cast-iron look alikes available, and very inexpensive (I got mine at Ballard Designs). They are great for our front door which has no overhang (any other mats we put there just get soaked). Great for kicking off snow and mud, and durable.

Those interested in child TV viewing might want to watch the lecture (about an hour) by Dimitri Christakis, a leading expert in the field. It was presented to MDs but is easy to follow. http://www.seattlechildrens.org/health_care_professionals/education/grand_rounds_online/2008/10/003887.asp

recent study:
Audible Television and Decreased Adult Words, Infant Vocalizations, and Conversational Turns: A Population-Based Study. Arch Pediatr Adolesc Med, Jun 2009; 163: 554 - 558.
Conclusions: Audible television is associated with decreased
exposure to discernible human adult speech and decreased child vocalizations. These results may explain the association between infant television exposure and delayed language development.

Great suggestion MsAmanda. I will have to try that myself. It's really hard for me to get out of symmetric layouts--that's a perfect way to visualize it.

I use mine as a bedside table, with the top surface for my lamp, phone, keys, and the bottom rung for my books. I love how sturdy it is!
