I definitely prefer the oven method -- you don't have to check it very often. I also use the cold plate test to know when it's done -- put a small plate in the freezer, when it's cold, dribble some of the apple butter on it. If water separates out from the apple butter, it's done: http://erinskitchen.blogspot.com/2006/10/cant-stop-canning-apple-butter.html

I really like to freeze winter squash and sweet potatoes that I've cubed and roasted myself -- just put it into small ziplocs and you have an easy way to eat well on weeknights -- make some couscous, maybe some beans, you're good to go.

Planning to make the winter squash and couscous salad from your site: http://www.thekitchn.com/thekitchn/vegetarian/recipe-cous-cous-salad-with-winter-squash-and-cranberries-043717

A healthy dinner to balance all the baking I'm planning this week--got the Martha Stewart Baking Handbook for xmas! Tried her double-chocolate brownie cookies already--fudgy deliciousness!

Planning my first apple crisp of the season, and perhaps some lemon ricotta blueberry pancakes? I've got a bunch of ricotta to use up.

Steak! On our new (tiny) charcoal grill, illegally (I think) parked on our fire escape in Manhattan outside our bedroom window. The husband and I were slightly concerned that the flames might cause the neighbors to call the fire department, but no sirens yet--and frankly, it'd almost be worth it--how I've missed grilling this summer!! We'll try to squeeze in a few more grilling adventures before summer really, truly ends--pork chops are next.

This summer I've been eating the same thing every day--two whole grain frozen waffles (lifestream makes good ones), plain non-fat yogurt, a bit of jam, some berries and some sliced almonds. It's fast and filling.

My favorite Campari cocktail is what I've dubbed "The Rainwater"--named after my boss who introduced me to it. It's Campari, prosecco, grapefruit juice and a bit of lime. Here's the recipe: http://erinskitchen.blogspot.com/2007/04/learning-to-like-campari.html

I live at 96th/Broadway and have been shopping at the 75th street location since moving to NY last August, and it drives me nuts! It is waaaaay too crowded, and I think part of it is the Fairway management's fault--there is no system for line control and the constant stocking of shelves makes navigating certain aisles impossible. The Harlem location is much better, but it's not convenient for after-work stops. I also think the produce at the 75th street location leaves something to be desired. I've been hitting the Whole Foods at Columbus Circle instead--it can be crowded too, but at least there's a functioning check-out line-up system and the staff is much friendlier. Also, for good, local produce I hit Barzini's at 90th--they've had local rhubarb and asparagus in the past few weeks.

leftover apple, fennel and celery salad, with a few slices of salami and cheese as a supplement. I like to pack lots of snacks for the day (I'm in grad school and often on campus from 9-7 and am trying to save $$!)--grapes, almonds, raw bell pepper strips, etc.

I always "splurge" on meat--as in I'll spend good money for the good stuff--not that I'm always buying the most expensive cuts.

Also, cheese and local, organic produce--it's worth it to me to buy better stuff that I'm excited to cook/eat, especially if it keeps me away from even more expensive restaurants.

I try to stay away from expensive "gourmet" products like salsas, jams, sauces--I can rarely use up the entire product and I can often make my own for significantly less.

Also--$6 heirloom??? Where did you buy this? Was it worth it?

Hmmm...rinse them off? Only if you dry them very, very well, right? Because I would assume any excess moisture on the leaves, etc would ensure that they went bad more quickly?

I second v in boston's strawberries in salad recommendation. I really like the peppery strawberry salad in particular.

minipanda--Soon I'll be moving from LA to NYC and while overall I'm very excited, I'm going to miss California farmers' markets and produce horribly. I know NY has the greenmarkets, but it just won't be the same.

On another note, I'm making jam with some friends this weekend and would love to hear about any interesting recipes involving stone fruits...

I agree on Super Natural Cooking, and would also recommend the Sunday Suppers at Lucques Cookbook--there's obviously a lot of meat in there as well, but Goin has some amazing side dishes of veggies.

I recently made this Strawberry Black Pepper salad--usually I just gobble my strawberries right out of the basket or chop and put them over ice cream, so this was a 1st course treat. I think any mild or sweet greens will do--I used spinach.

Thanks for the reminder of this paste/marinade. I like to use it on grilled sea bass kabobs (from the Sunday Suppers at Lucques cookbook).

I just made some individual strawberry-rhubarb crumbles last week--so easy I could even make them on a work night! Last year, I made some fabulous <A href="http://erinskitchen.blogspot.com/2006/10/rhubarb-schnapps.html">rhubarb schnapps. Also, I like to stew it with a bit of mint and sugar and serve over vanilla ice cream.
