I think it's funny that napkin rings are considered "fancy" these days. I was always told that napkin rings are to keep used napkins for re-use at the next meal. If you're washing your napkins after every use, there's no real need for a ring, it's just an excuse to add some extra stuff to your tabletop.

@JulieR: One way to get a long-arm sofa effect like that is to buy 2 right hand (or 2 left-hand) sectional pieces and put them together. The important thing is that the back of the sofa and the arm have to be the same height. We got ours from CB2 but other places have them too.

Advising against a rod unless your hoops will slide VERY smoothly. I have a double-height loft window and when I'm at the bottom of 15 ft of fabric I really appreciate the smoothness of curtain tracks.

I love NYmag, they find the coolest people. I would live here in a heartbeat. A little macabre is good for you! Life needs both death and humor.

nononono. Don't like this color at all! But I do like AT showing us more variety in styles lately; keep it up!

I know it'd be a BIG change, but the first color I thought of for your cabinets was a very saturated red-orange. And then paint the other cabinets under the stairs the same color as the walls.

I think for the kind of design geeks who collect chairs but don't use them much, this one is pretty rad. And if the designer is really "celebrated" as a 2D artists, then the paper designs should have some value even off the chair. For those who insist on durability, there could be an improvement along the lines of a removable hard lucite top layer which allows the paper to show through?

I try to ignore the rampant misuse of "it's" vs. "its" that occurs AT-wide, but I think any regular writer (including bloggers) should know better than to write "chimney's" ...ever!

And does anyone else think it's a little lazy to merely repost another publication's work without much comment?

Still love you AT; carry on...

That first pic is adorable, but ridiculous. It's a non-crafty design person's idea of a craft station. AS IF we crafters could keep three different types of materials in one tiny color-coordinated shelf!

Also, if you're a beginning knitter, a nice super-chunky weight yarn will knit up fastest and will accentuate the look. Also keep in mind that light colors show texture better than dark. It's a shame to put lots of cables in a dark yarn--you can hardly tell what the design is!

Lisa, you took the words right out of my mouth--(guessing the poster meant "eminently?") I love this blog but one of the things I'm going to miss about newspapers and newspaper writers is the proper handling of the language.

Is "vignetted" (did you just coin that, or is it decorator-speak?) maybe like those open-house fake scenes with picturesque tea and scones set out and a magazine "left open" like someone was just reading it (but wasn't)? In that case, no, I don't like it for a real house.

Agree with Birdablaze--I'd never sleep for fear that painting would suck me into its creepy vortex like the scene in Poltergeist.

I know you want probably something more traditional, but, why not embrace the barn idea and do something rustic? Not red-gingham and haybales rustic (though that's a fun idea for someone else), but elegant rustic like a Husdon River farm: pewter ewers holding less "done" flower arrangements, wooden chairs instead of gilt ones, off-white linens instead of bright white, antique-looking candlesticks (maybe even hurricane lamps?) and so on... It could still be very elegant in an old-fashioned way, and using the space instead of trying to hide it.

The inspiration for her room is a lot like the inspiration for the rest of the show: classic American Western with Chinese influences. Even though "bordello-chic" is sort of catching on, I bet you can still find some, say, rose-glass sconces and lots of other rococo bordello stuff for cheap. Then, you could add a few Asian touches here and there, like those silk hangings, or maybe an intricate carved-wood footstool. I agree with Sparkle (above) that low, indirect lighting is the key to the sex appeal!

Definitely not just a Southern tradition--I grew up in the Northeast in and around many historic neighborhoods where blue painted porch ceilings are typical. Though usually a more subdued blue than the pics here... Either way they look great on old houses, especially those in near the water, like in Maine, Cape Cod, etc.
