Having grown up in a shotgun house in NOLA with NO porch, I'd have to agree with everything written by architexas and businessgypsy.

While I can appreciate the firm's desire to create affordable post-Katrina housing, that house looks like such an eye-sore from the outside. It might be right at home on a sandy beach somewhere, but it doesn't offer anything to help beautify the neighborhood. It's already pretty stark, how is this building going to look in 3-5 years time once the modern newness has worn off?

Those "fluorescent windows" spanning the front are just awful. They'll let in too much sun/heat in during the day and will draw too much attention (and BUGS) at night.

One can't even add character to the front of the house since there's no porch there. Mind you, this house DOES have a porch, it's just at the back of the house where it doesn't belong (for this region). That back porch, coupled with the low windows on the side of the house, practically invite burglary.

I could be "meh" about this too, except it's an APARTMENT BUILDING. As newly-developed rentals go in Seattle, this one looks really, really nice.

I'm also pleased to see that at least one development firm in Seattle thinks a bedroom should be larger than a Cal. King-sized bed.

I still don't have a Blu-Ray player. Even if I do get one (possibly in an HTPC) I'm still staying the course, going as digital as possible...

That IS a rather odd placement, but who knows, maybe that's where the studs are sturdiest (or something).

If I could make one suggestion: Mount a (right-justified) floating birch or natural colored shelf underneath the flatscreen to put the component on then add the lines onto the shelf...

I'm not judging other people who do, but for me personally, having stuffed animals in the house at my age would be downright creepy. Not as creepy as Marie Osmond's house probably is, but creepy enough.

@bepsf

That's why a project like this is a really great idea to attempt during the holidays or on the Friday before a 3-day weekend.

Another really great option is to plan the decoration remotely and store everything at your desk/trunk, waiting for the right moment to strike. If everything's already pre-measured, cut, and ready to go you can execute on your lunch hour or just after work...

Can I order this from a Lillian Vernon catalog, or should I just clip it out of the back of Parade Magazine this Sunday?

I don't cook all that often and generally prefer to eat out or order takeout most days of the week. Sometimes it takes me 2 hours just to make a decision on which restaurant to order from.

My "Aha!" moment happened about 5 months ago. I was in the grocery store picking up some snacks and ice cream when I saw this kinda hot guy standing in the section where they keep the bags of ice used for cocktail parties. Well... I decided to move in closer to get a better look at him when I noticed that he was picking out several frozen microwave dinners. And I said to myself OH MY GOD, grocery stores contain entire aisles of frozen microwave dinners!

I mean, I knew they existed because I sometimes see people with them in the kitchen at the office, but it's never occurred to me to actually go to the store and buy them! Why did I never think of this before!?! I immediately phoned two of my friends and informed them of my life altering discovery...

@ jmorey: Hmmm, yeah me neither. I don't anything indicative of LOST in the design. If anything, it reminds me of the Station ID/Logo for SHOWTIME.

@reedtricia:

I know the feeling well. In your case they probably sold your sofa out from under you and had to wait for it to be reshipped from Europe.

I ordered a sectional sofa from IKEA and my delivery showed up with two improper ends (two right-L's). Incidentally they told me the sofa would be delivered at noon and it ended up being delivered at 6:30 a.m.

When I called IKEA immediately after delivery I was told that I'd need to speak to the delivery co, whom had actually directed me back to IKEA. Once connected to the right person I was told that IF MY CORRECT PIECE WAS STILL AVAILABLE (and there was only one left according to their inventory), it would be delivered at 7pm that evening, and someone would call me back to confirm a delivery time. Well, no one called me back. I called them again at 6pm and was told they weren't delivering/picking up the wrong piece that evening.

I was told that it would take 3 days for them to process the error, decide WHO was at fault (!), and THEN they'd schedule delivery. In the meantime they insisted on leaving the one piece I paid for in their inventory, free to be bought by another customer. If it HAD been purchased within the three days I, like you, would've had to wait 8-10 weeks for replenishment stock to be shipped from overseas.

The correct piece finally arrived but didn't quite fit with the original end-piece that I kept. There's now a incongruous gash large enough to slip a hand in in-between the two sections. Knowing that returning the newly delivered section meant I'd be living with a half a sofa for 8-10 weeks, I decided to just cut my losses and cover the space with pillows.

I don't know if I believe this little story about that tiger. I feel like it was just nailed there after the Sarah Palin feature and resulting brouhaha to see if AT readers truly have some kind of double-standard. Well this should prove that we don't! I appreciate the sentimental value but even with all the other cats it's really out of place.

Other than that goddamn tiger, I love Mary's little home and all it's other animal features even though it's not my personal style. It looks like somewhere I'd loved to have gone to after school as a child to eat chicken soup, learn to play go fish, and how to write funny words in as many languages as possible. :-)

I think maybe AT should do a "month" on chaotic style.

And Grace, Thanks for the insight into this guy. Before this I thought he was just following a trend. It's cool to know that he actually wrote up a business plan for this idea long ago and then followed through on it. And while the idea was not completely original in itself (see Patrick McMullan), at least he helped refresh and revive it for his generation/demographic.

I would've preferred matte finish slate/charred grey leather to plain old black leather, but the glare from the lights make it look slate-colored anyway. So yeah, good combo.

I'd replace the rug and pillows in a warm-cold-neutral-pastel rotation each season.

I have friends whose home I hate to visit and one of the main reasons is because they let their dog sit on the sofa. Hell, there's dog fur everywhere in their house and car. Whenever we have DVD-watching functions within my circle of friends their place is the last resort.

However if their skeevy dog was even *1/5th* as cute as the one in the picture, I'd let him sit on my lap every visit! :-) SO Adorable!

I love all 3. But really as little tables, not chairs. I don't expect to be too comfortable in them but love the idea of them as benches in spaces too small and high-traffic to fit the actual seating pictured. It would be terribly fun for kids. kinda like a life-size pop-up book!

The only uncomfortable one of the three is the middle one simply because it seems leave no real shoulder room while facing the dining table. I wish there were pics of people using or standing next to them for scale.

And I'm fairly sure the designer would've factored in load bearing into the cantilevered designs.

Wow, color me jealous! I love this kind of stuff...

I and a fellow AT:Sea reader took a local furniture design class here in Seattle and the only mediums we were allowed to work in were balsa and cardboard. Even with the woodworking shop less than 30 feet away!

Well I for one love it. I love the way it's in keeping with the theme of the residence, vertical/horizontal planes signifying movement from one zone to another hybridizing functions as they go.

I suppose food could be served/prepared in the other 75% of the kitchen that is under the 2nd floor or off where the oven is (or maybe in that dining room seen far off behind the kitchen). The part just under the stairs is left empty to accentuate the line...and let's face it, no one's going to use the detachable section to eat off and it's most likely where all the random "junk drawer" items go.

When I was younger I used to go into high end furniture stores all the time and take pictures. I would go up to the front desk and tell them I was a design student and ask their permission. I was never forbidden to take pics, so this whole idea seems stupid to me. But at the same time I feel this anti-photo stance came from so many people stealing images from sites and actual stores for ebay-ing and the like.

Overall, I think theft of ideas is going to happen whether stores like it or not. In the meantime they truly are preventing people from using technology to show friends and family great pieces thereby generating more business for themselves.
