What amazing lighting, color and design. Great photos, too! Thanks.

What a great place to have a layover! The soft colors of Rome are one of the things I remember most about my first encounter, especially the well-aged yellows, oranges and pinks of buildings that were often overlaid with hanging vines and flowers from windowboxes. It's such a priviledge to be able to spend time in a city without a sightseeing agenda. Thanks, and wlecome back.

Many thanks, Sarah, and all who commented. I can appreciate your mom's dilemma, since I also have too many books. I've pared down 3 times but can't seem to get below 1,500 in MANY different categories, so I have to label them. I also reference a lot of them in my work, plus I just love books. I love how warm they make a room feel, how colorful and diverse they are, and how they reveal a person's journey. I love the way they smell, age and feel in my hands -- not to mention the wisdom they contain. I'm inspired now to reorganize my books. I especially like the clip-on moveable variety and I love the carrmclean site.

I love the idea of creating a "window" where none exists, especially the backdrop in the first photo. It gives me all kind of ideas for things that would not be expensive to do but would create a great focal point.

Fingernail polish remover does the trick as well, including the non-acetone kind.

The reflection of the water inside is beautiful! Water is so calming, but the only way I know how to bring it into inside decor is with a fountain, which is sometime less than calming, it can be a noisy distraction.

Great post. I'd like to know more about how to decorate a room like the one in the last photo -- one that's long and narrow and has multiple low windows. Any ideas?

The two Knoll's Krefeld lounge chairs and ottomans look very comfortable, as do the chairs by the fireplace, but I agree that some of others do not look like chairs you could curl up in to read a book. I like a sofa for stretching out but no matter how long a sofa is, it's usually occupied by only two people when guests are there, so it ends up offering no more seating that two chairs offer.

These are amazing pieces! I just bought a mid century dining set off Craig's List for $300 and wonder now if I spent too much. Great find!

My husband's mother was a political junkie and had vinatge pins on a long narrow piece of fabric that hung on her wall in a narrow space. It made a great conversation piece.

I love the interest that comes from combining old and new and especially appreciate the fact that you were able to use something of your gandmother's.

I'm not much of a pool person, but "Day Pool" makes me want to dive in. The piece from the Ann Nathan Gallery is beautiful.
