I've been using my tankless for over fifteen years now and I have never had to flush the unit ever. I do have a small hose that is attached to my supply line that I place in a bucket. open a valve and run the water for about three minutes just to clean the screen. It sounds like a plumber is putting the boots to you. The unit doesn't need to be oversized it just needs to be installed by a competent plumber who know how to figure out how big of a unit you need. I raised four kids with a tankless heater and they only get fifteen minutes to shower after that I turn off the hot water. They can shower with cold water all day long if they want but I haven't ever seen them stay in there once the hot water is shut off and it only takes once and they learn not to screw around in the shower, you get in shower and get out.

I think your research is flawed. I changed from a standard electric hot water heater to a propane on demand heater and it was inexpensive for me. If I spent 200.00 dollars it was a lot. my old heater died and I purchased a Rheem heater. I installed it myself in less than 3 hours. The 200.00 was for parts needed I followed the enclosed instructions and I had no problem. I have had it in use for over four years now and no problems at all. As far as carbon emissions go I think your way out in left field. I mean not even close. The new units are so well made and engineered that the only thing that comes close is electric. And just think of the carbon foot print the power plants create. now that's a no brainer.....
