When I was a kid and moved, the movers set up something like this to slide boxes and mattresses down the stairs. I got home from school and the stairs were a slide. The movers let us ride the mattresses down. Great fun!

At a neighbor's house, we would stuff a foam pad inside of a sleeping bag, sit inside, and slide down the stairs. The foam pad was a little wider than the sleeping bag so the bottom stayed curved and made it slide better.

I love Pepperplate. Very pretty, can take recipes from most sites, does grocery lists, free, and has Android and iOS versions. I generally import recipes on my computer or ipad, then look at the grocery list on my phone.

My husband recently got a new job with a bonus, and we'd been living in a 2 bedroom Seattle apartment with a roommate. We bought a townhouse in one of our favorite walkable neighborhoods, figuring that housing prices are just going to go up and we want to get a place while we can afford it. We're very lucky though - 2 incomes, and he's a software developer. They remodeled our old apartment after we left, and now it costs more than our mortgage. Rent is going crazy here and new apartment buildings are going up all over the place; I'm glad to have a locked rate with our mortgage. We both grew up in Portland, and the areas we like best there have similar housing prices to where we are now (about 2.5 miles north of downtown Seattle). Seattle feels like a bigger version of Portland, with more jobs (but more traffic, too).

I'd put a nice big pot of bamboo on wheels in it, then hide stored garden tools, trash cans, etc. behind it.

I have a Vornado that died when it fell off a too-narrow window sill where I stupidly left it. They still honored the warranty and sent me a new one. I have good feelings about Vornado.

My favorite method for making ice cream is to stir the mix while pouring liquid nitrogen into it. The nitrogen evaporates and your ice cream is the right consistency after about 5 minutes. The only drawback is the difficulty of acquiring liquid nitrogen. I made ice cream this way in a college culinary arts club. The club president was friends with some chemistry grad students, who supplied the liquid nitrogen.

I agree; the photo should be taken down and merits an apology. I also wonder if those who think we're hypersensitive would feel the same way if it was a photo of a man in the same pose and state of undress. Whether or not it personally offends you, it contributes to a culture where women are devalued.

When I was a kid I had one that folded up like an umbrella. I wasn't as interested in the fly-exclusion properties as in the folding; it was a really fun toy :-P

You probably have to take into account the specific product as well. I have heard that turning bamboo into fibers for use in things like clothing requires extensive environmentally-damaging chemical treatment. Bamboo furniture is probably fine.

Studies have shown that children born into households that use the most cleaning products are more likely to get asthma and autism. And some plant compounds (like lavender and tea tree oil) mimic estrogens and can lead to things like breast growth in males. I'd be really careful what you use.

I've used live traps to catch the squirrels and then released them far away. You bait them with peanuts or marshmallows and the weight of the squirrel in the trap triggers the door to close. You can probably buy the traps online, or build your own.
