The German that's spoken on the History Channel WWII documentaries isn't that beautiful a language... but the German spoken by my high school German teacher, who was from a part of Germans with a much softer accent, IS a beautiful language. Sounded totally different - for example the softer "ish" for ich.

Anyway, I like the shower :-)

The second sink is great if you've got a cat that insists on drinking out of the faucet.

Wow thanks for all of the comments and advice! I hadn't considered blue, but that sounds perfect. Thanks apartment therapy! :-)

Re the art:
Clearly my warhol flowers are not a hit. When I hung them, I had a taller purple sectional and a blue couch, but my ex took 'em when he left and the flowers remained. Y'all are right, they clash with the brown and would be better off in the stairwell (or storage?). For above the couch, perhaps I can take the larger piece and cluster it with the two smaller prints I have in the stairwell by the same artist (calder, my favorite artist :-)

For the one person who liked my sofa:
Believe it or not, it came from La-Z-boy. I didn't want to go into the store but my mom made me and it turns out they had this great comfy couch that didn't cost a fortune.

Do mean to store, or when you get home from work? For storage, I have a thing on the wall with a row of coat hooks (I don't have that many purses, only 3-4).

For my everyday purse/laptop bag, I have a designated chair by the front door where it goes. Kind of like a landing strip annex.

The first thing I ever bought from someone on the internet (pre-ebay, I'm old) was the Belgian version of the poster for Lawrence of Arabia. It was a hulluva lot cheaper than the English version, and makes for a more interesting conversation piece. I had no idea I was being trendy ;-)

The Scooba is the best thing ever for keeping floors clean. I would have thought we'd have flying cars by now, but a robot to clean my floors is just as good!

I use it on my bamboo floors and it works great. I think it actually gets the floor cleaner than mopping, because instead of spreading around dirty water, it puts down fresh cleaner and squeegies the dirty water into a separate tank. Genius :-)

I had one of these for a year when I was living in a 600 sq ft apt that lacked a secluded out-of-the way place to stash the litter box. I thought it worked pretty well.

The "pot" comes apart in half so it's pretty easy to clean. There's a filter below where the tree screws in, which helps keep odors controlled. I put a similar terra cotta pot next to it to hide the scoop and bags, and I scooped obsessively. And I put it on top of a rubber litter mat to reduce tracking.

As for the decor, it was in the corner and it just looked like I had a plant there. Nobody seemed upset at it's fakeness. I think people are are overreacting just a bit.

(And FWIW, there's no way you could have room for a real plant that size to have a stable root system and room for the cat to do his or her business.)

I love the wallflowers from bath and body works, especially when they're on sale for 6 bucks. Eucalyptus is my favorite :-)

Your mural idea sounds awesome :-)

It sounds like you're wanting the railing to look a little more refined, and maybe be a solid panel to hide the clutter of your reading loft. So, perhaps something like this?

Non-fluorescent lighting and a comfy bed are the most important things, at least in my experience. And inexpensiveness.

Do they still sell those halogen torchiere lamps? They may not be up to AT design standards, but nothing lights up a room like it. With the right floor lamp, you'll never have to use the overhead fluorescent light. Just try not to burn the place down by tossing your dirty clothes on top of it...

Make your bed a comfy place for sleeping and reading. Get similar bedding to what you have at home. (If you sleep under a cotton quilt or chenille bedspread at home, you'll never sleep comfortably under one of those synthetic fill comforters that come in those bed-in-a-bag packs.)

Get an eggshell mattress and a pillow-top to put on top of it. Then get oversized pillows so you can sit up and read on top of your made bed. And get a reading lamp for the head of the bed.

Re the decor:
- get a bulletin board or other photo board type thing so all of your photos are contained in one spot, rather than taped all over the wall
- Bring one or two nice prints, then decorate the rest over the course of the year as you come into your own style. Then your room will reflect your personality rather than a design magazine or target ad.
- plants are awesome :-)

I'm sure that back in the 70s the design mavens thought all of these trends were "here to stay" as well - lol.

Also, isn't "design trends here to stay" an oxymoron?

If you like a little more color, I recently got one of these space-dyed cotton throws, and I like it a lot. It's nice and lightweight for summer:

If I had a door I was allowed to screw things into, I'd totally buy this one:

I have always slept under chenille and am just not comfortable sleeping under anything else. I tried matelesse but it wasn't the same. Something about the way the chenille breathes...

Anyway, I recently replaced my traditional patterned chenille bedspread with one of these more modern ones, in moss green. I think it looks great: http://tinyurl.com/lvpb76

I don't get the hatred that some people have for chenille, but ultimately, it's my body that's got to sleep under it, and no way I'm sacrificing a good night's sleep for someone else's design aesthetic! :-)

I do this for my bedside water. Because I can't have a glass of water by the bedside like normal people because my cat will compulsively knock it over at 4am...
