The photos and writing were spot on. Enjoyed the both. As for the design, the only thing I'd change is to add more/different tables in the living room. Whoever is sitting in the chairs has no place to set a drink down.

The Barbie family portrait kills me! Love it. Love all the artwork actually. Obvious attention to details and you smartly invested in some quality pieces like the chaise and table.

For anyone planning a trip to the south of France, I know people who have a fabulous home they rent out. If you mention my name, they'll give you 10% off.

One good thing that's come about to combat this is the growth of craigslist and ebay. Perhaps it's just a trend, but I'm seeing more people bragging about the great deal they got on a piece from a thrift store or online. Things are "vintage" instead of "old". I know I bought 2 of my main furniture pieces in my apartment from craigslist and furnished an entire apartment for a staging project through craigslist listings.

One note about old phones-you can donate them to be distributed to women's shelters. I've done that with my last 2 phones. For someone who has nothing and desperately needs one my old flip phone is a godsend.

Thank you for so beautifully illustrating the difference between layered and cluttered! I love the Brooks Brothers chairs.

I remember seeing something on tv a few years ago about using 2 shipping containers to create a little guest house. They were set up so that they overlapped halfway in the middle creating a 16ft. wide kitchen/living area. One narrow end had sleeping quarters, the other narrow end had storage and a bathroom. Given how much stuff we import from China, scoring a some cheap containers should be easy!

I love the hairstyle silhouettes, too. They're adorable. I wonder if you could fit some sort of a narrow sofa table in the space. I am not a huge fan of seeing the back of the sofa and it could serve as a buffet near the dining area. Maybe something with glass so it still feels open?

That's right....the new issue did just come out. Well, now I can look forward to reading about it on every single site I normally like to browse on. Ugh.......

Okay, I can take back the table comment. Just looked at the first picture again and see that everyone has a place to set their beverage. You're good. =>

I really liked this. If I was a single guy living in the city with the means to do it, my place would look just like this. I don't think of it as LA style in a DC place. Instead it's appropriate furniture, art and lighting for the space. And the artwork and lighting, in particular, are fabulous!! The plants definitely do a lot to add some "warmth" to the home. The only thing I'd change is to put a table of some sort in the seating area in the first picture. Maybe some sort of acrylic peekaboo style?

Queens in the house!

Posts like these are why I come to the site. Real people on modest budgets with creative and well-thought homes.

I think the acrylic coffee table and the desk/table on spindly legs do so much for adding some openness to the space. Way to use the vertical space. And you have officially inspired me to get off my lazy butt and hang the artwork that has been gathering dust in a corner.

The art totally makes it for me! I like all the neutral--makes it feel clean and open. I like the bedding, too.

I don't do over the door shoe storage, but instead hang from my closet rod. If you arrange them back to back and slide in sideways, they fit nicely. I like that handbag idea-but the shoe storage makes it difficult to do.

cb2 does some attractive arc lamps for about $200. Not stupid cheap, but a good value for what you're getting.

How Should I Light My Living Room? Good Questions | Apartment Therapy New York

2 things bothered me about the Tenacity design: 1. it didn't really blend well with the existing architecture. The kitchen is sleek and modern--and open to the living room. All the woods, textures, and layers of stuff just didn't go with the actual space. 2.There was entirely too much stuff! You can barely get into the seating area in the living room because the dining table and chairs are so close. The chaise sectional was a much better choice.

I think my favorite part was the great attention to lighting. Cove lighting above the kitchen cabinets and around the bathroom mirror make such a difference.

Love this place! Lots of clever accents and great use of color to keep it feeling light and open. Just goes to show how placing art or object in the right frame can really elevate them. I have been debating trying a succulent garden (as I'm cursed with the black thumb of death) but you've inspired me. And I don't think it looks staged. I'm guessing this is what it looks like when you have company over. Or virtual company.

Pretty awful? Jeez, that seems a little harsh. The pictures may seem a little tepid compared to what we see on this site but they're meant to appeal to a large (non designer) audience. If nothing else, the rooms are photographed very nicely.
