I can completely sympathize your disinterest in dealing with sales people. Often times (and, in fact, in the case of my job) you sit in a line of X number of sales people, and you take turns assisting clients as they walk through the door. Many are paid completely in commissions, and once "their customer" leaves, they go to the bottom of the list. There isn't tremendous traffic in furniture sales (I am lucky to have two-three opportunities to make any money/day) and this can make some sales people campy, or overly eager. Browsing in stores where the employees work on an "UP system", and are paid completely in commissions, and then being cold or short with sales people who truly only there to help you is rude of any customer. We all see our fair share of people "wasting time whilst having an oil change", "meeting someone", "waiting for a cab" etc. and these people literally take hours of opportunity from salespeople like me, just trying to make a living. If you want your sales person to treat you with respect, acknowledge the fact that your presence is keeping them from assisting more serious customers. Do your research, measure your space, come with some kind of timeframe for the purchase of your mattress/furniture.

I am a furniture sales person, who specializes in mattress sales. It is unfortunate how little people seem to know about the importance of sleeping on a supportive and comfortable mattress. It is frustrating, and sad to see elderly customers, doubled over in pain, or suffering spinal, circulatory, or muscular degeneration as a result of spending a third of their lives on an old, unsupportive mattress. The average warrantee on an innerspring mattress is 10 years, but it is rare that they serve your body well for the entirety of that warrantee. Many people ignore tingly toes and fingers as a result of severed circulation at the shoulder and hip. Severing this circulation causes tossing and turning in sleep, resulting in a less restful nights sleep. Adults should expect to spend at least $1600 on a queen mattress/ box-spring set. It is important that an adult sleep in an individually pocketed coil mattress, with enough "give" to conform to the body; or on a well tested memory foam or latex mattress (Sealy Spring-Free, Tempurpedic, Simmons Comfortpedic Advance, Serta iComfort.) These style mattresses are built to conform to the body, isolate motion transfer, and support the lower back. I cannot stress highly enough that YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR when it comes to purchasing a mattress. It is important that you do not ignore the necessity of a supportive and restful sleep.

Be selective when purchasing a mattress. You should ask questions and be involved in the process. It is important to know wether or not the location from which you are purchasing has a "Comfort Guarantee" (wether or not they give you a grace period to break in the mattress and make sure you've made the right choice for your body.) You should ask if the retailer services your warrantee. As I mentioned, it is rare that a mattress will last you the lifetime of your warrantee. You will want the process of dealing with any costly issues to be as easy as possible. You should talk to the retailer about what types of damage will void a mattress warrantee. Any staining, burns, or accidental damages will void a manufactures' warrantee. Some retailers will offer a liquid-resistant mattress cover, which will also allow them to cover your warrantee when the manufacturer may not. This is a valuable advantage, and worth your investment. Also be sure to ask about the warrantee that is specific to the brand and model mattress you are purchasing. Many memory foam/ latex/ luxury innerspring mattresses will come with a 20-25 year warrantee. Oftentimes, warrantees are pro-rated after 10-15 years. Steer clear of any mattress that doesn't have a full 10-year warrantee. Manufacturers such as Sleep Number are pro-rated after 2 years. This is an unrealistic timeframe, and a risky investment.

If your mattress is leading to aches, daytime tiredness, numbness, spinal or muscular discomfort, it may be time to invest in a new mattress.

The top picture looks like some kind of shrine to your tv, with the candles and the framed photo. I think this is plenty clever, but doesn't seem practical. Frankly, I think the desk looked better pre-re imagination.

$12.00 dollars for a kitschy bent hanger that will wind up in a garbage drawer. Make-shift menorah and sitting atop a bottle of wine; its more insulting than campy.

Again, garbage.

For me, what makes this room look sloppy is:
The paint on the walls: The lines and colors are too busy, and I really think that the colors are too bright for the clashing, more natural color scheme your furniture seems to follow.

The book case: I think that the lack of interesting breaks in the rows of books cause the shelves to appear cluttered. I'd get rid of some books and maybe use the extra space to display interesting things or chic book ends.

The pictures on the walls: I think you should stick to some kind of focus instead of spreading them out over both walls. I think you can do without the deer head (I get what you're going for but I just don't think its working for you...) and I'd frame and mat the large colorful print (the same as you have with the others.)

My suggestion to make this room look as good as it can in MY vision, with limited changes would be to paint the walls a neutral color (think white or off white), lose the sofa pillows (or replace them with crisper ones, the existing ones look sloppy), mat the artwork and pick one wall to group it on (losing the deers head), minimize the number of books in the book shelf and chose a different shade or curtain for the window. Unlike many others, I actually really like hide carpets, but I think they look much nicer in more modern minimalist rooms with clean lines. I think just getting rid of some things would vastly improve this space.

Elle Decor was horrid this month. I get the concept of "Artists we Love", but I feel like the editors just flipped through their rolodex, chose their favorite designers and artists and pulled an add for each of them. This month's Elle Decor is page upon page upon page of adds. it wasn't until page 220 that I found design without a pitch, and by that time I was so disappointed I had already written off the magazine as a whole. I wish I could believe that this is just a bad month, but Elle Decor has been terrible for me for the last SEVERAL months. I'm done buying Elle Decor. $5.99/month for page upon relentless page of advertising for furniture I can't afford... I wish I could get my money back!

I don't think an apartment full of DWR furniture is very creative either. I think a variation of interesting things makes for a creative-looking space. I don't think ordering everything out of ANY catalog takes much effort/thought/creativity/intelligence. Not only does the furniture scream "Thank God Ikea can tell me whats hip", it also screams "Thank God I didn't have to put any genuine thought or effort into furnishing my space." The furniture in this apartment lacks character and that is what I find charming about the majority of apartments/homes on this site. I didn't furnish my apartment on a trust fund, I don't own ANYTHING from DWR (read: It would be impossible for me to find the money for ANYTHING from DWR) yet because of my love for tasteful design, and my observation of nicely designed spaces, I've managed to create a coherent, interesting and comfortable space suitable to be posted on this site. Finding pieces with character doesn't cost any more money than a trip to Ikea (read: Antique stores, thrift stores, flea markets etc.) The true nature of good design is found in the effort exerted hunting out the RIGHT furniture that represents your taste and character. Ikea is a cheap and easy solution to design- but in excess, not what I would consider to be good, thoughtful design. You're all correct in defending this competition as a color competition, but color is nothing without careful paring, selection and decor. It takes very little effort to match your paint color to your bedspread, it takes very little effort to buy a rainbow of pillows from Ikea- and thus, this spaces is "a long shot" for me.

I don't think the colors in this space are cohesive at all. I don't think the design is appealing. I don't think that mindlessly trusting design to Ikea is a solution.(I don't see any piece of furniture or lighting -the piano, that didn't come from Ikea.) I don't think its wise to enter a contest without evaluating your competition. This space isn't up to the standards of the majority of users here on AT, and if this persons feelings are hurt by the harshness of AT users, they need to understand what they've put themselves against. Surely part of the blame is to be dealt to the individual who "designed" this space, but it is equally unfair for the AT mods to post spaces that will undoubtedly be labeled unacceptable by users.

It needs work, and it's great that you're trying- I think its fair to say that you really aren't prepared for this competition and hopefully you'll find some creativity from the harshness of these criticisms.
