I've been eyeing the mattresses made from wool here

http://www.shepherdsdream.com/

although they seem a little more like a wool futon then a mattress to me.

Then there are these, made from latex, wool & cotton

http://www.savvyrest.com/

And finally, these, which take the whole "purity" thing very seriously

I would love it if you were able to test any of these.

Is the lamp with the turquoise shade the one that is Thomas O'Brian? Any hints on where it can be purchased? A google search didn't find anything for me. I am looking for a few hits of turquoise/teal for my brown and red living room and that shade would fit the bill nicely.

I really found the Pantley book useful because of all the options she gives (plus a little physiology on what you can expect at what age). I'm pretty sure the latest research on sleep is that babies' circadian system doesn't even develop until around 40 weeks. I have a baby that used to wake up a ton all night and sleeps for much longer stretches now (at 6 mo). I think it's a combo of time and some of the hints from the book.

I think no matter how you decide to handle this part of parenting, the best thing is to realize every child is different and trust your instincts.

It's nice that you're thinking of your neighbors. I'm not overly fond of hearing anyone's kid scream in the middle of the night, on a plane, in a restaurant, etc. and I try to make sure ours never bugs people if I can (it's hard on a plane). However, regardless of whether or not children are liked or wanted by someone doesn't erase the fact that we were all children once and someone had to hear us.

I'd be careful about the hay and alfalfa you buy. Some are treated with preservatives to prevent molding.

Diet makes a huge difference in the stink factor when it comes to feces. Ours get a bio-appropriate diet (ie, raw bits) and their sh*t don't stink. We use pine pellets, clean out the box every night, and scrub it out periodically to make sure it doesn't smell. I wouldn't want to use the toilet in a rank bathroom and I don't expect them to either.

They have some of the worst customer service I've ever encountered. After my last experience I've decided not to mail order anything from them ever again.

I had ordered panettone baking forms for my annual Christmas baked gift basket I give out to close friends and family. I also ordered a few other things to make the shipping worthwhile (their shipping fees can be pretty steep). They shipped everything but the baking forms, citing them out of stock on the order form. They neglected to inform me of this by email before the order shipped. When I checked online, the baking forms were in stock. When I called I was told they were out of stock when the order was shipped and it isn't their policy to put things on back order. I was welcome to replace the order and pay more for shipping then the baking forms themselves.

I can understand not wanting to backorder items since they have to eat the postage. What I can't understand is how they think it's ok not to inform you of something missing in your order before it ships. It seems like if you can run an online website, you could do this fairly easily.

Love their products, hate their customer service!

These make great cat jungle gyms for aptbound felines. Wrap them with sisal rope or sisal carpet remnants for scratching and traction, affix with a glue gun. Add sisal carpet covered cement forms if you want to get fancy. I like how it looks better then the polyester carpet covered monsters.

Older linoleum (well, not really linoleum, but I guess you're not just referring to flooring made from linseed oil) can have asbestos in it, so I would get mine tested before I messed around with it.

If it has any sort of "smoke" flavoring I'd avoid it like the plague. I have a friend who will eat the most vile stuff imaginable, but she works in a toxicology lab and you know what she and her junk food eating co-workers call smoke flavoring? "Liquid cancer". Appetizing, no? I'll take my carcinogens on a real piece of bacon if I'm going to go for it. This sort of stuff reminds me of replacing butter with hydrogenated soybean oil (margarine) because it's more "healthy". Missing the forest for the trees.
