Painting the cabinets won't turn this kitchen into the kitchen of your dreams (an airy, white contemporary kitchen, i'm guessing), and they'll ding and scratch. You could save for a new kitchen someday, or new countertops (quartz starts at about $3800), but meanwhile, these cabinets are rather nice. I see what you mean about the granite, and agree with the person who suggested removing the granite backsplash if poss. to reduce its visual impact. I would change the cabinet hardware and put in a shiny cream backsplash. I second the vote for subway tile with darker grout. Then I'd paint the kitchen a cool neutral from Farrow & Ball, maybe Strong White. The yellow walls are making the green of the counter appear even more green. It's a little too much black and white for me (altho you don't say what's in the rest of the room). I would do something crazily else as the ends of the table, such as pale blue or orange Panton chairs, or short upholstered benches. Something with softness that's a bit organic-feeling would echo the zebra pattern and contrast nicely with the more linear Ole chairs. Black or Clear Ghost Chairs? The good books shelf is the equivalent of redesigning a string of christmas lights -- you can hardly imagine a visionary solution, but here it is. I love it! Apartment Therapy New York | The Finals: Redeploy Rug, Soft-Maps or Good Books Shelf? Design Showcase 2009 Semi Finals |

My first thought was the same as the editors': Orange! A solid orange, or a ticking stripe or other pattern. That would be fabulous for a chair. With a nonmatchy blue pillow (like electric blue, or an intense aqua). Apartment Therapy DC | Good Questions: ArmChair Advice? |

Made this tonight. I subbed fresh tarragon, since i don't like parsley. The flavor was great, but texture wasn't exactly "velvety." it was a little... grainy? or broccoli-particle-ish. i used an immersion blender and thought it would be smoother. i added more feta. added more olive oil. still not velvety. that's my only disappointment. but we liked it. and my 11-month-old will like the sauce tomorrow straight up, as a puree. I find that large doses of luxury greatly offset less-than-perfect rental situations, such as yours (by the way, I agree with others that the bathroom actually is quite good). If you can't retile, say, buy towels so delicious you want to eat them. My favorite are Abyss/habitare (available at ABC Carpet). The colors are deeply dyed, gorgeous, and many of them would work with your color scheme. They are unbelievably fluffy. I also have a great Habitare bathroom rug. I hardly notice that the plaster is crumbling in the corners of our old rental bathroom. Good Questions: How Can I Make This Bathroom Work? |
