I like the idea of reupholstering this classic piece, but I'm not convinced the finished product is an improvement. But then again, as long as the owner totally loves it, who cares what we think?

Ditto on the gum chewing. It's the only thing that keeps me from snacking. Wine does NOT help...just makes me want to munch even more.

I so love this post, especially all the comments!

Every couple of weeks, my mother used to give us a special treat of toaster waffles topped with ice cream for dinner. My Italian husband would probably keel over and die if I tried to pull that off, but it's worth a shot.

We do have it in Canada. And it's tasty. But is this stuff actually good for us, or is it just fun to drink?

I always prefer homemade ketchup, but I usually just make it by spicing up some tomato paste with vinegar, maple syrup, chipotle puree, and herbs. But then again, I could also eat tomato paste straight from the can. Love the stuff for some strange reason!

Has anyone actually done the converting mini-blinds to Roman shade thing? I live in a condo and one of the rules is that we cannot replace the awful mini-blinds on all our windows, but I could totally put fabric on the inside of them as long as they look like regular blinds from the outside. I found one tutorial online for making shades out of blinds, but it requires that you essentially dismantle the blinds, which won't work in my case. Anyone have ideas about how to do this without changing the way the blinds look from the exterior?

I also vote for a more purpley gray due to what appears to be a very creamy (i.e., yellow) cabinet color. Plus it's newer and fresher feeling to me than blue-gray.

I would serve food on this, but, for actual prep work, I too love those plastic cutting boards you can just toss in the dishwasher and know are "clean."

I am so in love with my Mr. Bento. The only bad thing about working from home is that I don't get it use it anymore. Though sometimes I'm tempted to pack lunch in it anyway, just for fun.

lal: for hard water stains in the toilet, I have had great success with Vim. You know, the oven cleaner. It's the only thing that's really worked for me. However, I don't use it every time I clean because the fumes lead me to believe something in there is highly toxic.

I live in Victoria, BC and one of our island wineries makes a really nice verjus. I usually just buy their wonderful balsamic vinegar, but I took a cooking class from Mara Jernigan (local chef and president of Slow Food Canada) and she used routinely used Venturi Shulze verjus in place of lemon juice because there aren't really any local lemons. Would a Vancouver Island product be local enough for you? It's totally worth the short trip over from Seattle, but if you're not in the mood for that, I'm pretty sure they ship.

On a slightly different topic, does anyone know if there is a way to buff out scratches on a stainless steel fridge? We put an ugly (though not deep) scratch on our new fridge the other day and it is breaking my heart.

I am not "over" the flip clock screen saver. In fact, I really like the look of it and the convenience of having a big clock in my office. However, after having it on my lovely new iMac for a couple of months, it has left its imprint on my screen. The desktop background now has a hazy shadow of the outline of the clock, and the letters "AM" are clearly visible, no matter what image I put on my desktop. Beware!!!

I love lentils! My two favorite ways to eat them are with chevre and walnuts:

and with hot chili garlic oil ala Mario Batali:

People cook with MSG at home? On purpose? Really? From a website that tends to focus on fresh, unprocessed, local food, this content is confusing to say the least.
