I love the bathroom, so sparkling white. Very good point about demolishing everything before actually starting. Often, in those flip shows, I just cringe when I see somebody pick up the sledgehammer because rarely do they know when to stop! Ryan & Alana's Gut Renovation Small Cool Contest |

In an old recipe for rhubarb pie, it said to let the sugared ingredients "set' for 15 minutes before putting in the shell and baking. When you do this, it makes the most amazing syrup and the pie is unbelievably good. We always do this. Spring Recipe: Rhubarb Crumble Pie Recipes from The Kitchn |

Immune system disorders can be really tricky to accurately diagnose. My daughter was treated for two years for one thing and then it was found she really had something else. So I agree with above post that you should try to find a temp home if possible. Giving Up Your Pets |

Jeff, you did your job well. You used your space so efficiently that you fooled many people into thinking your kitchen is bigger than it is. Love the crate shelves over the garbage can and the blackboard paint on the cupboard door. As a landlord, I'm always trying to think of ways to make kitchens work well. I appreciate your ideas! Love the couch. Tell me you didn't get that out of a dumpster! The whole thing looks great. I think putting a bed by the window is definitely a personal choice. It would wake me at even a glimpse of daylight but some people need to get up that early. I like the whole room. Great job. I love seeing other people's ideas here. If the landlord will let you paint, that's fine. I probably would have left the shelves natural but white is cheery. The place is chic, yet homey. Years ago, when my dh and I were newlyweds, I would leap into full home makeover mode every time my MIL and FIL were coming to to visit. At the time, it seemed stressful but it encouraged us to keep up appearances. Now that they have both passed away, I really look back with fondness to those times. A little extra motivation now and then can be a good thing. The MIL Seal of Approval (Phew!) |

If it makes your door hang crooked so it doesn't shut properly, then it's a problem. Too much weight and it can permanently make the door hang crooked and landlords don't like that. Still can be useful hanging other places, like behind a door that's always open. Small Space Solution: Over-the-Door Home Office Organizers & Storage |

Thankfully, since I found Apartment Therapy, I buy fewer magazines. I gotta tell ya, I used to have a pretty bad habit with the big glossy pictures of beautiful rooms. For a while, I had my groceries delivered and what I saved by not buying magazines and junk food more than paid for the delivery charge. I love that you are enjoying your little kitchen. I have been married 40 years now and lived in a mobile home the first 5 years we were married. We had a tiny kitchen. It was actually a lot of fun to think up inexpensive little ways to make it homey. I used to do my dishes when my favorite tv show was on so it wasn't such a drudgery. Finally, we found one of those portable dishwashers that you roll around the floor. Those hanging wire baskets are always useful. I need to find mine again. Thank you for sharing. I am glad so many people are compassionate about the bats. They eat several thousand mosquitoes in an evening. As far as birds, we regularly have starlings get into the house and can't figure out where they are coming in. Starlings are even more "bird-brained" than the average bird, however, and we have found cornering them and using a box to put over them seems to work best. You can then slide something flat under the box to enclose it and carry them out of the house. A robin got in the house this spring and was easy to shoo out the door by comparison. As a landlord, if a reliable tenant offered to commit to a longer lease, I would do a lot to please them. Upgrading appliances either with new or better used ones will make the apartment more appealing to future tenants. It's a no brainer. Just a tip for all renters, if you have your money a few days BEFORE it's due, go ahead and pay the rent. You will be in such good graces with the landlord that you can get away with a lot! I just had a tenant who was transferred and didn't leave the space absolutely perfect but I refunded his full deposit because he always paid his rent early, even as much as a week. When it's the last of the month and your scraping the bottom of the barrel to meet expenses, those kind of tenants are lifesavers! Can I Ask My Landlord to Go 50/50 on New Appliances? Thanks, Amaranta! I grew up on a farm and my daughter's a veterinarian. Look up giardia and don't bathe your dog in the kitchen sink. Yes, you may be able to completely sterilize your sink afterwards but, odds are, most people won't be that thorough. There are many, many other low budget, apartment-friendly options. But I do really appreciate the ideas for spring cleaning. It's great to have a routine and breaking it down to 15 minute projects is less intimidating and more likely to get done. 5 in 15: Five Spring Cleaning Chores To Conquer in Fifteen Minutes |

I, too, am grossed out by dog washing in sink because of possible transmission of parasites between pets and people. I keep a heavy plastic storage tub with all the appropriate dog bathing stuff in it. When I need to give the dog a bath, I empty the shampoo, rinse, brush, etc., out of the storage tub and use it for a bathtub. You can sit the tub on a chair or sit on a chair yourself to make it a convenient height. I use the lid, turned upside down on the floor to sit the wet dog on and dry off. You can get a great pet hose at many pet stores that makes it easy to reach from the sink to the tub so you can still do it in the kitchen or wherever there is a faucet. 5 in 15: Five Spring Cleaning Chores To Conquer in Fifteen Minutes |

I totally want the party button! I saw a house done to be "automatic" for a family on HG tv and the parents programmed everything in. The time the lights came on, what music played, syncronized everybody's schedule, etc. Frankly, I thought it was creepy but this is controlled by the user and just seems fun. Well done! These look very European and cool but the mechanism repair does concern me as well as how much weight they can support. It seems like there could be a happy middle ground with the down drain very close to the wall instead of in the wall. Streamlined Toilets from the TOTO + Villeroy & Boch Line KBIS 2012 |
