Last night I made broccoli rabe, mushroom, and chicken sausage gratin. I've been eating mostly root vegetables all winter and that bitter, bright taste of the broccoli rabe really was a treat (leftovers for lunch, yay!) What's Cooking This Weekend? Weekend of February 11-12, 2012 |

Jerusalem artichoke soup. Something with rutabagas (any ideas? Prob. a gratin of some sort). What's Cooking This Weekend? Weekend of February 4-5, 2012 |

This does look good, but I just had transcendently good fried chicken at Gus's in Memphis, and this just ain't worth it. I'd rather eat their real fried chicken once every five years and know I'm getting the real, bad thing. I won't tell you how many pieces my family put away...ok, 30 pieces for 5 people. I'm so glad I don't live there, I don't know what I would do. Healthy Dinner Recipe: Fake-Fried Chicken |

Would never give up coffee. But long, long ago in my first real job I watched all the "grown ups" (people the age I am now!) drinking coffee all day and getting all hopped up on it. I decided then and there not to drink it all day long. Instead I make one really fantastic and LARGE cup with freshly ground high quality beans every morning at home and that is it (unless there is a birthday cake or something at work). 70s, maybe, but the one I remember best, is from the Beatles' charming & silly movie "Help!" where they all allegedly lived together in one house in Swingin' London, featuring a conversation pit bed! Conversation Pits: Time for a Comeback! |

Over the top, but I guess that's the Super Bowl. I'd laugh if someone served it to me, and I wouldn't expect to eat like this all the time. I don't watch or care about football at all so the likelihood of encountering this for me is zilch. Buffalo Wing Cupcakes: A Savory Super Bowl Snack |

You know what really scares me? If 22 spoonfuls is the average, and there are a bunch of us out there not eating many processed foods and going many days in a row without any added sugar at all, how much are the people who do consume it REALLY eating? More than 22! Sugar Substitutes: For or Against? |

I am very, very careful about my sugar intake. I used to be fat. I'm still overweight but I'm slowly taking it off. I avoid HFCS and all sweeteners other than cane sugar (in signifcant moderation), molasses, maple syrup & honey. I LOVE maple syrup. I think I could drink a gallon of grade B straight up. (I won't!) I have used a service now for years called Boston Organics. They deliver a box of produce to your house every week. I did a general box for a long time but this year converted to the "dogma box" that is sourced within 200 miles of the city. For New England, that means a LOT of root vegetables, keeping squashes & apples, and a few bags of cranberries last fall (which I make into jam, divine!) I actually love this, although the volume of turnips is intimidating. I supplement this ONLY with winter citrus from Florida, and only in small amounts, as a special winter treat. I'm learning to pickle things in order to keep them, and also to cook things & freeze them in portion sizes. I'll do better next year. Where Do You Shop for Fruits and Vegetables in the Wintertime? I almost never listen to the radio but I don't own an iPod. Not everyone does. I DO listen to streaming radio on the web. As long as radios are used for emergency broadcasts I think getting rid of them is short-sighted. I even bought a hand-crank solar radio last year (we kept having snow & more snow and I was worried about info if all the power was out for a long time). I love kale in all its varieties, but I do not find raw kale of any sort palatable! It makes me sad, these salads get such good reviews and I cannot eat it. I'm not crazy about anything raw except fruit, so I'm sure that's part of the issue for me. 101 Cookbooks' Raw Tuscan Kale Salad Recipe Review |

I have no idea how the Irish do it, but I stew mine in water without added sugar. When they are done to my liking, I remove the prunes and boil down the water to a thickened syrup. Then depending on my taste I will add a bit of sugar or maple syrup, a dash of red wine and/or some cinnamon. Stewed fruit is delicious with good yogurt or heavy cream (esp. warm) or mascarpone cheese or creme fraiche. Do You Have a Good Recipe for Stewed Prunes? Good Questions |

This is essentially how I approach all chores. I have one chore per card, customized to my house. Every day I do one chore. On weekends or if I'm at home, I do three. The deck is seeded with multiples of two cards: Sort papers (I keep a box for all incoming mail, bills, etc). and Shred papers. It works pretty well at maintaining order if not super cleanliness.
