100 isn't that old for England! My parents lived in a 400 year old house when they were stationed there in the Air Force in the 1950s.

I just love him. He's so adorable. And wonderful food and recipes too. I don't understand why PBS never showed any of his TV shows over here.

I don't understand the point of having bookshelves that have almost nothing on them. I get not wanting to have stuff, but then don't have shelves--makes no sense, not minimalist at all.

Yes, beautiful. And I'm wanting to repaint my place in a light neutral so I'm glad for the tip on a paint color, will check that out.

You only have 100 sq ft more than I do and yet your place is so "empty" compared to mine. I've been trying to clear out a lot of stuff and open it up a bit more. Your place gives me something to study!

Enjoy Park Slope--lovely!

What I'm doing right at the moment is trying to eat out of the freezer. I have all kinds of great stuff tucked away in there that I've forgotten about, and I'm going to want to clear space for his summer's produce. So every morning I'm taking out the first thing I find in there and using it as my springboard for dinner ideas.

Tonight I'm eating some formerly frozen bolognese on a couple of mashed organic potatoes. Num.

When I was a kid I really disliked vegetables, EXCEPT for artichokes, which we ate plain, boiled, no melted butter, no mayo, no nothing. I LOVED them (still do). I think the fun of pulling off the leaves was what it was all about, and they way the heighten the taste of anything else you eat with them.

I was dumb enough as a kid to hand over the heart to my mother, who cleaned out the choke and then ate it herself. She always told me I wouldn't like it...evil, evil.

Use a lot of butter when you make scrambled eggs. It is delicious. Put a tablespoon (only 100 cals and eggs only have about 70 cals each, so two eggs with a lot of butter is only 240 cals--you still have cals left over for fruit and a piece of toast! (if you try to eat 500 calories a meal like I do).

I use cast iron and my eggs never stick. Warm up the pan, not too hot. Melt the butter until the foam starts to subside. Then add your lightly beaten eggs. The butter should keep them from sticking. I don't add milk or water to my eggs either.

By the way, this works with olive oil too if you are lactose intolerant. I will fix them that way sometimes for friends who are. I prefer the butter taste, but it still works.

Wow, I wish you'd been around when I was in the hospital. What a thoughtful and fun person you sound like. People don't seem to understand the limitless boredom of hospitalization, if you are conscious. I would have given anything for a huge pile of completely frivolous magazines. That's what I always take to people when they are sick, but no one else seems to!

We had pet chickens when we were kids. Rooster very loud but very smart. He'd sit on your shoulder and eat from a spoon. Hens a bit dopey, but would cuddle. I don't remember eating a single egg. Eventually the raccoons got them. So sad!

Promptness (other than in extenuating circumstances) is a qualification for friendship as far as I'm concerned.

If I were throwing a party I'd tell people, come whenever, but if it is a Sunday lunch or a dinner party, I make the expectations known. If they blow it they won't get invited back for a meal.

I had a boyfriend for a brief time in my very early 20s who was always late for everything. I think he thought it made him eccentric & adorable. It was obnoxious. I learned a valuable lesson from that disrespect--don't put up with it, no one is worth it.

Show Up On Time

One or two bad hangovers in my late 20s was enough for me.

Drink a ton of water WHILE you are imbibing.

Drink a full glass of water before you go to bed

Take your preferred NSAID. Mine's ibuprofen, a gentle dose, not a lot.

Think about what you've done, you miserable worm. Drink some more water.

Take another ibuprofen when you get up in the morning, more water. Then coffee or tea if that is your thing.

And in my case, never, ever drink tequila unless accompanied by copious amounts of food. That particular spirit has it in for me. I can drink gin all night with nary a problem, but even one tequila can do me in if the circumstances are right (dehydrated and no food).

Poor mice, just trying to get by in the world.

In my experience they are far more interested in fats than in grains. If I leave even a drop of oil on the top of my stove, the next morning they will have found it.

Cats are 100% effective. But having said farewell to my three sweeties over the years, I'm not ready to spend on cat food, cat litter and cat sitters just to keep the mice at bay.

My brother has a country house that stays empty a good 2/3 of the year. He has found the ultrasonic devices kept them mouse free this winter and that's what I'm going to try next.

I have a question: were the stair railings and newel posts painted when you moved in? I expect there is some gorgeous woodwork under there.
