I used this material on my house. I think it looks really cool and is basically maintenance free. I've never noticed it giving off a smell at all and we have extra sheets in the garage.

I'll second the comments about the Leggero bed. The slat design for the platform allows for the airy/minimal look while actually being strong enough for a good wedding night.

I managed to match a maple dresser from Work Bench with the beech. I have an acrylic side table and a zinc cube side table, both from Conran's. I believe the Leggero also comes in a darker, more cherry wood looking stain, as well. Conran's also used to sell this bed. They may still.
