So this is an office? I was worried about the chalkboard writing. It seemed a bit schizophrenic for a family home. I'm hoping they were working on a project.

It has some nice elements for sure, but I couldn't get my head around it for some reason.

Good job making a builder basic into a happy home! I like the use of color.

GREGGANNYC:

The new layout allows you to specify tours of studio and apartments if you prefer those tours. Just hover over Tours in the column on the left. A drop down will appear. In addition to that, Small Spaces has a link all its own.

This is wonderful. Energizing and relaxing all at once. This is the house of a man who washes his dishes as he goes and continually searches for the sweet spot between thrift and luxury.

It reminds me of the song written by Guy Clark/made famous by Lyle Lovett called Step Inside This House.

JAYLIN,

Taking the Lord's name in vain means waging wars in his name, not saying it with a bad attitude. Silly goose.

For a minute I thought this was a tour of Natalie Merchant's house, the lead singer of 10,000 Maniacs from the 80s/90s.

I would save a little more and go for Crate and Barrel. The construction is better than average, and they tend toward classic lines that age well aesthetically.

The "(stupidly)" comment about your husband was unnecessary in such a public forum. Contempt is one of the 4 horsemen of the marriage apocalypse.

If this were the house of a friend I would compliment it. There are some warm touches, for sure! This home is probably more similar to the majority of the dwellings that belong to apartment therapy readers. I certainly am not judging the house in comparison to mine.

However, I feel that the editor/art director did them a disservice by allowing this to show in apartmenttherapy, given the usual level of design found here. By not leading them better, you've opened them up to criticisms which are no doubt hurtful and avoidable. Couldn't this have been a house call to give a nod to the nicer elements within the home?

Isn't it the professional's job to make decisions about what is display worthy? I say this with love, apartmenttherapy!

Blandwagon, nice try but I never said they couldn't or even shouldn't do it. I just think it looks contrived and unoriginal.

Polishhilton, I could probably have explained my point better, my apologies.
While I agree with your points about the Enlightenment and religious doctrine, don't forget that the founders considered the term "pursuit of property" before deciding on "pursuit of happiness" for the Declaration of Independence instead. But you are correct, there is nuance.

Jane Jones, I don't know how mentioning the well known historical fact that immigrants in the 19th century fled European and later, American cities due to cholera is ignorant. Perhaps you incorrectly imagine a world in which we always had germ theory and running water?

This house is really beautiful. I love the flat gray walls and the pop of red.

The Sambo art is a little too "Hipster Racism" for me. Oh I know, we're so clever, so cultured, so above it all... but seriously.

Rich white people, you need to stop this ridiculousness.

The extra money you spend for a counter depth refrigerator will probably be easily reclaimed in food (Stuff gets lost in the back) and energy costs over the next few years.

Before & After Remodel: Keeping the Best of the Past

Two things:

1.) America was founded on the notion that economic freedom through pursuit of personal property is the noblest endeavor. Big houses-for better or worse- are symbolic of the thing most cherished in our culture.

2.) I think it speaks to our romantic attachment to the bucolic. Before the technological comforts of the 20th century, cities were synonymous with cholera and tenement fires. Many immigrants landed in NY (having escaped the poverty of their own urban blights) with the idea that they could eventually move west and have their own place. Being king of one's own castle is distinctly American.
