Since it isn't really used I like the idea of painting it to blend in with the walls. And then maybe using the the fireplace to store or display something. I know there's been images of books, suitcases, and other odd things put into a fireplace opening. :)

I also love the hidden toys. My 8yo will occasionally leave a toy in the fridge and I don't take it out.

Love all the touches of blue! It isn't 'designed' and I sorta prefer that...it has a very comfy lived in look that is wonderful.

I love them, and would have them, but wouldn't display them year round...perfect for a unique Halloween collection!

I would swap the two pieces and paint the wall a deeper color. Painting would allow you to patch the holes left from moving the pieces and by using mostly what you have you'd only be out the price of spackle and paint.

Wow, it's amazing how many suggestions there are to paint when it was said that painting wasn't an option. I love your shelves but I do agree it's too much wood though I'm not agreeing with comments about the wood not matching the floor as how many of us perfectly match our wood furniture and wood floors. I'd find a removeable way to cover the back of the shelves with some sort of fabric or paper and then the use the shelves for what they were meant for. But if they really bug you I would find a bunch of baskets/boxes the same color as the walls to put on the shelves for storage then I'd hang a tall picture on the shelves to cover up most of the top portion then place a chair on each side underneath the picture. It won't completely cover the shelves but I think it would take some attention away from them without making it look so obvious and they could still serve a purpose.

Honest question, how does flushing your cat's poop infect the water supply and hurt wildlife? Is it really that much different than flushing your own waste? And what about all the wildlife (and not so wild life) that poops outdoors on a regular basis?

Is There a Good, Eco Friendly Cat Litter?
Good Questions

I have 6 cats and am often complimented on how much my home doesn't smell like it. I do clean often and found it helps immensely to open the windows to let things air out. I also strongly prefer the Scoopaway mulitple cats cat litter. I highly recommend feeding your cat a decent quality cat food; it does make a difference in the amount of odor of what comes out the other end and cuts back on how often they vomit/have hairballs. I also brush and bath my cats on a regular basis. And natures miracle, vinegar, and baking soda are my go-to's for when there is a stain/odor to remove.

ok, I totally understand that some people are severely allergic to peanuts (and other foods) but is that a reason for the non-allergic person to not have peanuts when eating out?

Lose the country in the kitchen and go more contemporary. :) I'd unify both spaces with the same paint color on the walls and, if it's in the budget, same flooring. Nice curtain panels and hardware for all the windows and larger artwork would go a long way in tying the two spaces together.

Love, love, love it! So much stuff, and truthfully probably more stuff than I'd be comfortable with, but it is put together so incredibly well. I'm bookmarking this for inspiration.

Absolutely not. I consider myself sensitive to that stuff and would rather avoid it as while yes, there are ok spirits/energy, there are also very negative spirits/energy. And I agree that ouija boards are not something to be played with.

I have a flat weave wool rug that I found at Goodwill that I sprayed down with diluted vinegar with no ill effects.

Vinegar is a good deodorizer...dilute with water and put in a spray bottle and give the rug a good misting. I was also thinking that maybe some dried lavender, or other favorite herb, sprinkled over the back side and rolled up for a week might help. Or maybe a proffesional cleaning would help?

I love cats and have had a multiple cat household the past 10 years and have lived in 6 different places during that time. Having a decent spot to put the litter boxes has always been one of the things I look for when looking at a new home just the same as some want a certain number of bedrooms/bathrooms...a less used bathtub, a kitchen cabinet that can be 'sacrificed', a portion of a room that can be screened off, a closet - it's easiest to just take the door off and put up a curtain but I do recommend covering any carpet with some plastic sheeting you can get at Lowe's/Home Depot, they even have some with a sticky back just for that purpose. Currently we have a small closet in our laundry room that houses the catbox and all the kittly litter related gear and I keep a utility mat in front of the catbox to catch the majority of the litter that gets kicked out....it's my favorite spot so far as it's near the bedroom and I scoop every morning when I get up and in the evening before I go to bed.

If you've had strep the bacteria can live on your toothbrush and can reinfect you and it should be replaced. I didn't know this a few years ago and mysteriously got strep 3 times in a row.

I was gonna say paint the base a color and give them a thick glass top so that you can see the interesting base but if you think the glass will be a hazard for your son, maybe not. :) I like the idea of turning them into mini-ottomans with a padded top and casters to roll. Having kids myself I would suggest going with an easy to wipe down smooth faux leather/vinyl top and painted base to coordinate with your decor.

AT posted Small Ways to Incorporate Wallpaper in a Kitchen yesterday as well. I had already seen this post but when I saw the third image here http://www.apartmenttherapy.com/dc/5-small-ways-to-use-wallpaper-in-a-kitchen-111484 I immediately thought of your kitchen. Just add your own accessories, a nice rug, a bamboo window treatment, and maybe wallpaper or just use wall decals to add interest to your backsplash and it'll look so nice. My own kitchen is almost identical in finishes and I'm now considering using wall decals to recreate that look.
