In Belgium, people will often add a dash of grenadine syrup to their Rodenbach - it's delicious!

@Saluki: freekeh is traditionally served with lamb (esp. lamb shanks) in Lebanese cuisine. It can also be added to soups instead of rice or pasta.

I sometimes use it as a base for Mediterranean-style salads. The flavour is robust enough that it can stand up to liberal amounts of garlic, onion, cumin, etc.

I love the idea of making holiday gifts with it!

You can look into Thai and Vietnamese recipes. Basil also livens up pretty much any stir-fry.

One of my favourite ways to prepare tuna: wrap a tuna steak in large basil leaves, then steam it for a few minutes, until it turns opaque. The basil adds a beautiful sweet note to the fish.

I mostly save on proteins - less meat and expensive fish, more legumes and eggs.

Like many here, I love cheese and will splurge on it, but only occasionally.

My biggest splurge is seasonal: summer fruit, especially cherries and really good peaches.

The copyright for the Barrel chair in the bottom pic is owned by Cassina (I Maestri collection).
DWR may carry the chair, but they don't manufacture it - or it would be a major copyright infringement.

And no, the Barrel chair, while gorgeous, is not terribly comfortable... better displayed as a piece of art in its own right, or used as a very occasional chair.

My neighbourhood is quiet and residential, but only 3 blocks away from two main commercial thoroughfares. I am surrounded by greenery, low buildings and character houses.
It is very convenient and central.

The public market is a 15 minute walk away. Within a 5-block radius, I can find excellent coffee and tea, independent bookstores, a large park, several art galleries, a number of good restaurants and two supermarkets.

I am also very close to two bridges (open to pedestrians) that put the downtown core within easy walking distance.

It just has the perfect mix of quiet/residential and close to where the action is for me. I am not moving anytime soon! :)

Thanks - I bookmarked this and will check out the related posts as well. I have decided that this was the year my tiny, drab concrete balcony is getting a makeover :)

Oh, how I covet the tall Sapien bookcases! I would need three or four of them though, so that's a bit of an investment.

If anybody owns one of the other models, could you let us know how happy you are with the quality? I remember reading that one of them was pretty flimsy... but that was years ago and I can't remember which one it was!

Thanks in advance - and thank you Sarahc for the roundup.

My signature savoury dish is a leg of lamb in puff pastry. The lamb is stuffed with mushrooms cooked in Madeira wine. The recipe comes from a wonderful restaurant in Provence and it has been my mother's go-to dish for special occasions for over 30 years.

I do not bake much, but when I do the most-requested cake is Reine de Saba (Queen of Sheba cake), a chocolate cake that is deeply flavourful yet light.

When entertaining more than 4 people I also like to prepare a Lebanese mezze rather than a three-course dinner, so I guess my friends would say that my signature dish is either fattoush, kibbe or stuffed grape leaves.

I love Martini Bianco (the white, drier variety). In the South of France where I grew up pastis is a religion, but I much prefer a good Lebanese arak.

My all-time favourite, though, is mead. I even tried to brew my own a few years ago, without much success alas!

Improving the lighting would be one of my priorities - I have one of those typical 70's galley-style kitchens partitioned off to the back of the living room, so it gets no natural light.

I would definitely take great pleasure in ripping out the dingy-looking faux-wood cupboards and replacing them with, well, pretty much anything whose finish is not peeling off!

Finally, I would repaint the walls and replace the flooring. The vinyl I have right now looks is rather pretty, but it is intricately embossed and hard to clean.

Thankfully, the layout is very efficient and the appliances are good quality, so my kitchen is great to cook in if not pretty to look at!

Like erinpeace, I would love a few pointers to pretty up my rental kitchen.
I do not mind that it is tiny - I actually work better in small kitchens, but it is dark, drab and the materials used, especially for the cabinetry, look very cheap.

My knife skills could also use some work. I am an avid cook, but I waste a lot of prep time because I am not using my knifes properly.

I look forward to getting started - this will be my first Cure!
