Yes you will have to cover the floor with the thickets and heaviest carpets you can find and you will want to cover most of the floor with these carpets. You could further reduce the noise buy laying down MLV (Mass Loaded Vinyl) underneath the carpets, the heavier the better. Note that this will be expensive. White noise is also good with masking noise, a fan or loud air filtration device will also work.

Noise will still enter through and around those carpet. You will also get flanking noise from your walls.

Good Questions

You can further improve the hack "Seal Off Your Door", I did this and more to my condo door. I added MLV (Mass Loaded Vinyl) you can order with adhesive on one side which makes it easy to apply.

However, now you are left with an ugly door. I
solved this problem with tin ceiling tiles, now the door looks great and reduces noise also.

I outline the steps on my blog:

Apartment Therapy San Francisco | Good Questions: Do "Interior Sound Proof Windows" Work?

I did a project where I added soundproofing to my exterior door, I am sure you can apply these same ideas to your interior door. The key is that the door will have to be airtight to prevent sound transfer.

Yes, you could get a used door. Just make sure that you use weatherstripping to make the door airtight so noise can not get through, otherwise you might as well use a curtain. This article will provide more info on sealing the door up: http://soundproofingwithdave.com/2007/06/soundproofing-exterior-door.html

You could also use a curtain to block the light and a loud fan to mask the noise from the kitchen.

I had the same problem at my condo, so I sealed the door with weatherstripping. I went further by adding MLV soundproofing to the door itself. Then I covered it tin tiles, to hide the ugly MLV.

You can take a look at the project here on my blog.

Apartment Therapy - Good Questions: Where Can I Find a Soundproofing Kit?

If there are any walls sockets that are located on party walls, seal those up airtight with acoustical or silicon caulking, the type that will stay flexible when dry. Then remove the baseboards and seals any opening there with more caulking. The more caulking the merrier. If you can seal all the wall sockets and baseboards.

Like other people have suggested here, get the thickest throw down carpet with thick padding that will give 80% or more coverage. Make sure the crib is on the carpet.

You can also blow in cotton or mineral wool into the ceiling cavity.

Another soundproofing company is http://www.soundproofingamerica.com . Another cost effective product is Green Glue from www.greengluecompany.com. Instead of blocking sound it converts sound to heat. It is especially effective with low frequency sound, which is the type of sound you are probably experiencing from your neighbors stereo. All you need to do is install another layer of drywall with a layer of Green Glue in between. Checkout the follwing articles.

Also download the "Sound of Silence Document" from Pratt School of Engineering at Duke University. It compares QuietRock which uses viscoelastic damping material similar to Green Glue to mass. http://soundproofingwithdave.com/2006/02/sound-of-silence.html
