Beyond tacky. If I was invited to a housewarming and told of a registry I: wouldn't go, or would get them my usual gift of a bottle of wine.

I am tired of the sense of entitlement. I feel like I'm constantly buying gifts for engagements, showers, stag/stagettes, weddings, baby showers, christenings, first birthdays, 40th birthdays, etc.

*sigh*

I do really like the colour you have chosen, so kudos on taking a risk with that.

I'm guessing that maybe you live in a bachelor apartment and that the screen is your bedroom "wall"? If so, I suggest you move the mirror to the dining room side of that wall (even if it's not centered). Actually, regardless of what is on the other side of that screen, it's really strange for the mirror to be disected by it.

Also, a dining room table is no place for a lamp. Move it out of the way... above the built in china storage perhaps? And get a larger vase or other centrepiece for the centre of the table. The yellow does look fab so maybe a big bowl filled with lemons. Also, get rid of the pillows on the chairs - pillows belong on a couch or on a bed.

One last thing... your little vases on the table and dressers look piddly sitting alone, if you grouped them together they would probably have a larger impact. And you can display them empty or with fresh flowers. I think the dried flowers may be making the space feel a bit sad.

And PS. I like how you've placed your dishes in the china cabinet!

Loving these comments!

I'm from Vancouver (Canada) and I absolutely take my shoes off when I get home and when I'm a guest in someone else's home.

At my own home, my assumption is that guests will take their shoes off (every single person I know has). And I have a stack of new guest slippers that I offer to anyone (in all sizes!) In addition to comfort and cleanliness, the reasons I don't wear my shoes inside are: wood floors that don't need to be scratched by my heels, berber carpets in the bedroom that get 'pulls' by my heels, and tenants below who have complained about the sound of heels on the floor.

Now, there are exceptions to every rule... if I have a party, people are welcome to wear their flats/runners/flip flops inside the house. If someone arrives in heels, then I mention the wood floor & downstairs neighbour, and offer slippers or socks or whatever they're comfortable in.

And when I go to a party, I bring socks or slippers or where flats myself.

PS. The reason for no heels on my wood floors... a friend had a big party and the next day discovered tiny dents all over his wood floor. They were the result of a high heel without the rubber bit. Now I'm way too paranoid to allow heels!

I really like the freshness of your room with the new paint and mirror - it makes your furniture look extra special. I'm always amazed how a new shade on the walls can transform a room from blah to wow!

But, I'm so sorry to say, those bins should be stored in a garage! Please, find something else to put up there, or leave it empty.

It looks like you have an orange wall at the front of your house? I love it! If possible, hang a piece of art (with orange in it) across from the hutch to unify the spaces.

I really appreciate you posting your 'after' picture. Thanks!

I LOVE amed studio's idea of leaving it black and placing a fun fabric on the top, under a piece of glass. Then, pull the chair colour out of that fabric. Finally, use a coordinating fabric for the chair seat (a stripe?).

Can't wait to see your 'after'!

I love the bamboo on plywood feature in your living room! What a great piece of interest for a low price. How did you attach the bamboo shade... glue, staple?

Hi Heather,
I don't have any advice for you because I'm facing this exact dilemma myself. I've enjoyed reading everyone's comments (thanks!) and I'm going to think about what advice works best for me and my space.

I hope you provide an update with pictures - I'd love to see what you've done!
