What's wrong with Ikea if it fits your budget and you like the design? I have a few Ikea pieces in my house and so far, no complaints. In fact, it's nice having access to designs that are typically priced well out of reach for the majority of us.

I saw your post in livejournal (previous to my actual voting, but it didn't influence it).

I love how your selection of colours break the expanse of walls and room's space into cozier elements, yet keeping an airy feel. And with such rich colours, that is an incredible task to achieve!
Only one comment on the advise side (in an otherwise perfect space): let your Barcelona chairs breathe. Maybe move them away from the wall (if poss.), and put the cushions on the settee.

I absolutely love the strong linear stripes and heavy contrast here. It helps define the splashes of colour without going overboard with saturation.

It's a great chair (I was at Ikea yesterday) and would buy it if I had a need for it. I noted that there were also slipcovers for it on sale, which had a very cool looking graphic drawing of a simple leaf on a black background (they also sell yardage with the same print on it).

Oh boy, this looks much like my own garden, which is a natural flower garden with native species--organic and pesticide free, of course. However, in many suburban neighbourhoods, this sort of look isn't embraced, where manicured lawns with marigold borders are the order of the day.

I love these Yugo knock-off's. I picked up one of these at my local Salvation Army last year.

I don't see anything wrong with the colour of your curtains, but the style is a bit...colonial? Maybe a more masculine type of window covering like a shade, or sliding panels, would be better. I'd also try to instill a bit more colour in the room, maybe with a plant or two, some sort of textiles around your seating area, a couple pieces of art for the walls, that way, the window treatments might not be such a glaring contrast. Your place is very nice, but it looks a bit plain and heavy.

Leave some clean and clear space for your guests to plunk their stuff down. Empty bedside table tops. bureau tops, even clear space on the vanity/grooming area. I know it sounds small in terms of effort, but when you're away from home and are facing not able to stash your items away, a bit of cleared area is most welcoming.

Directions to the closest bus/subway stop, a small map of the immediate area, with points of interest as well as supermarket (if they want to pick up snacks or bottled water) and drug store clearly marked.

WiFi, or free internet connection has always proved a great tool when I travel, and I now look for accommodation that provides it.

Just keep it simple and let them create their own good time.
