I had an awful experience with ABF, but I seem to be the only one here. They clearly dropped my entire "pod" of belongings from what must've been a significant height. The pallet under the pod/box was completely shattered. As were my bookshelves and vintage plates. Speakers were also dented, bike broken, etc. And I packed WELL. My engineer father helped me, making sure everything was as well situated and padded as possible. Because it's a "you pack" scenario, though, ABF takes no responsibility whatsoever if your stuff breaks.

I'll never use them again.

For all the hassle of having to move your items to and from the pod/box locations, it's not much of a financial savings either.

My Experience with DIY Long-Distance Moving

I made the NY to LA move with one ABF pack-it-yourself cube, and it was not pleasant. Because I only had one cube, I guess, they would not truck it all the way to either apartment--I had to move my stuff to their loading docks and pack/unpack there. It still cost about $2000. My engineer father helped me pack everything VERY securely, but it didn't matter. They clearly dropped the entire cube at least once--the entire wooden pallette on the bottom of it was shattered. My bookshelves were likewise shattered, and my vintage speakers were dented, as was my bicycle, etc.... I would not recommend it. It's been 5 years, and I'm still angry about it. Move it yourself or pay more money for real movers.

This place is hilarious. It's a very well-kept property, so no, I don't think I'd be too upset to be his neighbor. I'd be bothered by people leaving garbage and dead cars in their yard, or by plastering over their craftsman style houses with stucco...there are many more egregious examples of tacky "style" in Los Angeles in my opinion. At least this one is funny.

Wow. Uh, I guess everyone here has better taste than Julianne Moore. Good for you.
Personally, this is one of the few apartments in Domino that really inspired me--it's not overly girly, and the mix of pieces (high, low, whatever) with individual character is well-balanced with the overall look of the rooms.

I don't often like unfinished wood, but I think it works beautifully here with the exposed brick & paint color. I love what you've done with this space. (But I do wish I could see more of it.)

Are the prices here any lower than at the store? Because those store prices are wildly expensive...

Wow, people seem strangely harsh on this place. I found it to be cozier-looking than many of the other places featured, more naturally styled, and with some great vintage pieces!

I love the whiteness here, it looks clean & elegant to me. And I'm guessing the TV is where it is because the space is small, no? Isn't that what this whole contest is about? In any case,

I also like that there is 'stuff' around. That seems to bother other people here, but I prefer to see a place that looks like a home, not just a page out of a catalog. Nice job making the place cohesive, but not perfected to the point of dullness...

I'm so relieved to see so many people discouraging the painting! It always upsets me (maybe too much) to see beautiful woodwork painted over, and this is beautiful woodwork. I would not buy the house if that was all painted white. Maybe some brighter furniture would help?

I moved with ABF (Brooklyn to LA), and it was terrible. The box/pod itself had clearly been dropped--with some force, so probably from high up. The bottom pallet part of the box was shattered as were, you may have been able to guess, some of my belongings. Because it's a "you-pack" system, they claim no liability whatsoever for the condition of your belongings, and apparently feel free to throw everything you own around as if it's a box of pillows.

And yes, I had packed things very securely, with the aid of my engineer father, who has a knack for structures, weight, force, etc. It would have withstood plenty of normal banging around and moving, just not being dropped from 20 feet in the air or whatever they did to it.
Be very, very wary.

I have one that I got as I gift, and I love it. It has a rubber topper, which I'm not sure those in the picture do. It's not leakproof, but I take it with me when driving and at work...it's plenty useful, and much more pleasant to drink out of than any plastic or metal bottle.

i love the dark wood myself. it gives the kitchen some warmth and character that most white contemporary kitchens seem to lack for me. but definitely change the lighting! and the masterful orange paint job on the outside has to go...
if you could afford to replace the tile with glass tile, that might brighten up the room and make the cabinets look more modern (assuming that's what you're going for?)

To live alone in LA, all I could afford was a cockroach-ridden but relatively spacious studio in a very busy & loud part of Koreatown. Sometimes there was no hot water and the elevator would break all the time.
Now I have a very considerate roommate found through craigslist, and share a huge, sun-drenched upper level duplex in a great spot in Franklin Hills/Los Feliz with views of treetops and Marshall High, plenty of hot water, no roaches. Plus Trader Joe's (and numerous restaurants and shops) in walking distance. All for $25 less a month. For me, it was a clear upgrade.
It all depends on what's most important to you... roommates can make you insane, but so can loud, dirty neighbors...

Looks great, very tastefully redone!
I'm relieved you didn't paint over the wood. In ten years, thrifters will be cursing this current slap-paint-over-beautiful-wood-grain aesthetic as they breathe in noxious fumes trying to strip the paint back off.

I also break them down and store them. They take up almost no space at all that way, and can be reused mutiple times. Seems a bit wasteful to toss them (even into a recycling bin).
