We're in the middle of a similar project! We don't live in a loft, but like the post mentioned, our ceilings are pretty high...

My first apartment was broken into. I was in my second year of college, living in Clinton Hill. He climbed in through my bedroom window of our ground level apartment. It was a hot night and I had left the top part of my window open. Until then, I never noticed the bars on the windows all the first floor apartments seemed to have. The management let us switch to a third floor apartment which helped a lot. But it took a long time to regain any sense of safety. It was years before I slept with my door open, I still am adamant about checking locks. I'm not sure if I'll ever be able to live on the ground level again.

I've also heard that adding a penny to the water is supposed to stem some fungus growth. True?

I think I first heard about bleach in the water from Martha Stewart...

Didn't the guy featured in the Times article yesterday Living in Dust, make a similar, but nicer ( in my opinion) drawer for his plasma screen? It seemed to work better than this version.

Yes! I'd like to hear more about the DIY mirrored furniture. I feel like I was reading something recently about spraypaint that gives a mirrored effect, but can't find it now... anyone heard of that?
Gorgeous apartment!

If you're not handy with a sewing machine, and don't really care about the couch, try covering it with fabric, but use a staple gun and/or glue gun. Its pretty quick and it can look better than just draping material. I did this once to an old couch using a really great red, ribbed material. It only took a few hours! I'd look online (ebay, reproductionfabrics.com, or reprodepot.com) or at Ikea for fabric.

Thanks guido-- I think we are near Acme. I had no idea they were ever open to the public. I'll check it out.

Unfortunately I haven't seen any fish at the market in McCarren Park this summer either-- but maybe I've been missing it?

And yes, Metropolitan Fish Market is really great-- I used to live down the street from them.

Hmmm maybe this post will inspire someone to open a fish market?

I agree with Jon B. It probably will be a big jolt to your plants, but if the alternative is leaving them behind, its worth it to try. That said, I grew lots of happy vegetables on my roof in Williamsburg. Unlike most of the flowers, the tomatoes seemed to love all that unrelenting sun. Good luck!

Has anyone ever used glass paint for a similar effect? I wonder if that would work...
