This weekend I'm breaking in my spankin' new 5.5 qt Le Creuset with a pot of Chili. Gonna try Alton Brown's chili powder this time:

Maybe some or all of this will help?
I don't have a grinder but have been finding (fresh) decent and relatively inexpensive beans at my local gourmet grocery that I can grind in-store . I store coffee sealed in the black ziplock pouch it comes in, in a dark cupboard, and start using it right away-1# lasts me about 2-2.5 weeks. Don't store coffee in the freezer.
I use filtered water, a $2 melita cone that's about 10yrs old, w/ #2 melita paper cones.
As good a cup a joe as I could brew at home without a fancier setup.

Definitely power off. I was simply replacing a prominent switchplate cover in my rental kitchen, and some gentle torque on the outlet caused it to pop, smoke and trip the breaker. Turns out the outlet-which BTW looked like a 3 yr old installed it-was like a loose tooth in the wall and one of the contacts was able to touch drywall screwhead. A little scary when smoke starts coming out of outlet. I've since had the whole thing replaced and made sure it was wired neatly, straight and secure this time.

FYI Not sure if I learned this on here AT or elsewhere...Peanut butter trick has been working great for me to remove sticky labels and adhesive from new glasses, dishes and plastic items. Just spread a little on let it sit for a couple minutes, then wash everything off with dish soap and hot water.

Some of my recent bargain kitchen pans here:
Cuisinart multiclad pro is inexpensive and great quality stainless. Saucepans, skillets for $30-$50 on amazon or eBay. Another option, Lodge 10" cast iron skillet, ~$20.
Cuisinart chefs classic 3qt chefs pan is pretty versatile piece-$29.(not clad though)
Check out TJ Maxx too for bargains.

Funny you should post this, glad to hear I'm not the only one... The other night I found myself constructing a "cozy" out of some gaffers and a strip of black cardboard from some discarded Ikea packaging to kill the horrible blue led glow a hard drive was casting over my small apartment. Now it's dark as it should be. Course I couldv'e just turned the thing off, but that would be too easy ; )
