We have the same cherry Portica table as "Mike the med student" and we have the same unsightly scratches despite handling all our furniture with kid gloves. I have never seen a finish so thin. The table also gets little pockmarks everywhere. We use a cushioned tablecloth every time we have guests, yet the next day there is always more damage that looks like it was caused by sharp blades and blunt objects! I have never been so disappointed in a piece of furniture. Apartment Therapy New York | Room Board |

My husband and I bought a cherry-topped Portica table a couple of years ago. We are very meticulous with our stuff (to the point that we are mercifully ridiculed for it by our relatives), but we can't even LOOK at this table without it getting scratched. I think the finish is only measurable in angstroms. I am so disappointed. It does seem to be a pretty solid block of cherry though, so one of these days I'm going to dismantle and get it refinished by someone who knows what they're doing. Why would you take such beautiful wood and put a finish on it so thin that a paper towel could scratch it?
