I spend all of summer, fall and winter collecting random biodegradable "pots" for my spring seeds. Mostly egg cartons and oddly shaped cardboard packing materials. Use Citrus Peels To Start Your Seedlings My Roman Apartment |

I'm terribly allergic to chemical sunscreen, so I've been using mineral sunscreen since I was a kid... the only problem is you usually can only find one type in the store, if any, and my tiny little bottle costs twice as much as chemical bottle 3 times it's size. Oh well. Best Sunscreens: The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly Decoding Household Chemicals |

Here in Ohio, there are a good number of local producers that simply can't afford the "organic" certifications, even though their practices are more sustainable then the "Big Organic" farms. I try my hardest to stick with these folks. The Validity of Organics PRI's The World | Apartment Therapy Re-Nest |

The $100 "flash cooker" is a bit overboard, in my opinion. A $40 pocket-rocket stove and $5 of fuel will get a a weekends worth of cooking. And it took no more than 8 minutes to get our freezing creek water to a boil. Not sure how they boil their water (holding it 6 feet above the flame?), but I've never had it take an hour. 10 Camping Gadgets Worth Packing | Apartment Therapy Re-Nest |

Saer - google snowville creamery, I know they ship to a few spots on the west coast, but other than that, it's an Ohio thing... local for me :) It's pricey ($3.50/half gallon), but I now won't put anything else in my fridge... it tastes soooo good! All pasture raised cows and gov't min processing. Just the best. Kitchen Hack: Make Whipped Cream in a French Press | Apartment Therapy The Kitchn |

Much of what we see in, say, Whole Foods, is Big Organic. Unless you try to shop strictly local (or if your lucky enough to utilize your own backyard), Big Organic is what you get. While the industrialization makes me sad, the fact remains that organically grown/raised food is better for you, more nutrient rich (example: the soils are more nutrient rich when less chemicals are used). (Regarding city car emissions) I had a professor once give some statistics found on the emissions of city drivers simply looking for a parking spot (looping blocks, idling). I wish I could remember the actual stats, but I do remember having to pick my jaw off the table. Apartment Therapy Re-Nest | AT on ... The Suburbs |

I know over the course of a year I'll have extra bottles and bars of soaps, extra toothbrushes, and other random bathroom supplies, all unopened (typically gifts from people, but I never really cared for the type/scent). I'll get everything together and donate it to a 'helping the needy' organization. Apartment Therapy Re-Nest | Spring Cleaning Using Things Up |

In the past 5 years or so, probably more, Columbus Ohio has done an incredible job in making the city more bike friendly - and even extending bike paths out to main roads of suburbs. It seems like just about any side of town has a main bike path that can get you into the main part of town. Apartment Therapy Re-Nest | Survey: Do You Bike to Work? |

Last summer, before moving to a new a city, we decided to go down to one car. This greatly affected what part of town we would live in. I now depend on the bus system, so picking a neighborhood that had a fairly simple route to work was a priority. And while our apartment is tucked back in a quiet neighborhood, there is a target and large grocery store within a half mile walk. Our favorite markets do require a car, but having necessities within a 5 minute walk is a luxury. Apartment Therapy Re-Nest | Mobility, Access and Public Transit |

I'm not from Mass., but I work with the Ohio division of Wildlife - in fisheries research specifically. While division of wildlife websites are often for the 'big-timers', a simple phone call will get you a ton of information. DOW personel could tell you just about anything about any body of water in any part of the state. Apartment Therapy Re-Nest | Fishing in the City: Boston Ponds Stocked for the Season!Boston |

I'm not sure if there has been an increase or decrease in my town, but I sadly came across an article from my previous town (Toledo, Ohio), that mentioned an increase in trash pick-up costs... and those who recycle will receive an even higher increase. I was dumb-struck. How is this suppose to increase a person's 'desire' to recycle? Landfills = cheap now, expensive later. Recycling = expensive now, makes a profit later! It is so back-a$$ words, it makes me sick. I could go on, but I'm preaching to the choir ;) Apartment Therapy Re-Nest | Look! More Recycling Than Ever |
