Check this Wikipedia article for incandescent phase-outs in your country/area: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phase-out_of_incandescent_light_bulbs

The US is state-by-state, with the first being California in 2018.

Even with the "phase outs", I'm sure they will still be the lighting of choice for most people for decades to come.

@sbbrow No need for sexism. We men love it when *actual* thought goes into a gift as well.

As a former Rhapsody subscriber and new Rdio subscriber, Rhapsody's lack of a Mac client has been a huge con for me. The Rdio Mac client is fabulous.

Ya know, I think that cork board would look fantastic on its own. The added paperwork just feels (mind the pun) tacky and covers up the great texture created by the cork boards.

My suggestion is to at least buy _quality_ items that are built to last. I've made the mistake of buying cheap ziplocs and they break or wear out quickly.

If you use ziplocs for food storage, the quality ones can easily be cleaned or rinsed and reused scores of times.

As for the plastics points:

Reduction of our plastic consumption is important, being dogmatic and is going to turn people off (see ElevatorHappyFun's comment).

Remember how well abstinence education works for AIDS prevention? I think it's the same for any other cause.

Can't recommend this idea enough. I started doing this last year when I realized even my neatly wrapped cords were turning my cord box into dog pile.

A couple additional tips:

- Buy quality, thick ziploc bags and avoid the ones with the plastic "zip" device. Constant opening/closing will cause the bag top to wear much quicker than a standard bag.

- Get a packs or two of Velcro One-Wrap Straps. Unlike normal velcro, these will stay sticky forever. :: http://www.amazon.com/Velcro-Reusable-Self-Gripping-Inches-90924/dp/B000F5K82A

Making a PC look like a Mac is just silly – it winds up looking like a cheap knock off. If you want a PC that looks like a Mac, buy a Mac and run Windows on it. Period. Otherwise, roll your own understatedly sexy style.

@ChristopherB: Instead tie yourself to Microsoft devices that require Zune software? I see no difference there, however you spin it. Microsoft was going somewhere with PlaysForSure until they went ahead and made their own (new) proprietary system and spat in the faces of all their partners.

I agree, this looks like a stellar concept.

Unfortunately, like concept cars, there's no way the final product will look anything like this. Further, if it's a Windows machine, it'll be littered with "Works with Windows 7!," "Intel Inside!," and "NVidia Graphics!" stickers.

@FightTheFuture : Nintendo Wii. Exactly. That name got so much flack when it was announced, but we're over the "Playing with my Wii" jokes now.

That said, like the Wii, they could've chosen something better. But we'll get over it, too.

I saw this over at Engadget.

A lot of folks were pointing out that you probably wouldn't be able to rest a monitor on it (notice how the photo has it in front of the display/computer).

Also, the USB hub isn't powered, so those 6 ports won't be usable by anything requiring more juice, like a hard drive, DVD drive or speakers.

It's not actually being produced yet, so maybe they'll change their specs?

If not, the slimkey looks to be a much better product and is available now:

Sounds like a question for Beth Terry of Fake Plastic Fish: http://fakeplasticfish.com/

My take:

Plastic loses almost every battle. Be it glass or plastic, paper or plastic, etc. It never decomposes (as far as we know) and is made from all sorts of toxic compounds. Our lighters and plastic bottles will have lives that far out live ours.

Matches, on the other hand, are most likely made from wood that is byproduct since it's so cheap. They also decompose.

Chris Jordan has an excellent photo essay on one of the (many) places our little plastic things wind up:

There are plenty of plastic lighters in those bellies.

Ya know, I've always thought most Lego projects looked really corny but this one is slick! Uniform color, no visible studs, LEDs, the exhaust (!) = top notch attention to detail.

Just ordered the software and stylus the other day and looking very forward to playing with it. As a non-graphic artist, I can't justify a dedicated tablet device, so this fills the perfect occasional niche for me.
