We just bought a house with a dishwasher and I'm in HEAVEN. It's changed our lives. I cook more now without dread the sink full of dirty dishes.

We do one load a day (2 of us, and we wash our cat food bowls too) and put it up before going to bed at night. If I cook a lot I might do 2 loads.

I HIGHLY recommend the Method dish pellets ("Smarty Dish"). They work great and don't cost much. We get them at Target.

State Historical societies have FANTASTIC old photos and they will make prints of for you for a reasonable charge. You can search most of their photographs online by keyword to find what you want.

I had a 20x30 print of a 1890s photo of 2 farmers and their bounty printed for my kitchen from the Wisconsin Historical Society for like $70. I had to get a frame for it, but it was still a fantastic deal. And I'm pretty sure no one will have one like it!

1. Remove the scalloped trim if you can.

2. Remove cupboard doors on the top part. Leave them off.

3. Paint the inside and outside white (or paint the outside all one color, and the insides white).

It's nice having storage in the bedroom, but the pink has GOT TO GO! The scalloped edges might not be so bad without the pink.

We love our ceramic water filter crock. We've had it for 10 years and replace the $50 filter once a year. It was the best thing we ever bought, and when we have company they always want one of their own. It also keeps the water nice and chilly (but not too cold) and the taste is great. We gave one to my sister and her husband for their wedding, and a year later he told me it's the best wedding gift they got (and he never gushes over anything!).

We got ours from this company: http://www.epicwater.com/ When you call you deal with an actual person who is very helpful and know the stock etc. Their shipping is great too. When my sister's arrived cracked they shipped another right away. I'm not a spokesperson for the company but I can't recommend them enough!

What a great idea to pack them up ahead of time! I love croutons on my salad, and I keep them in a separate small baggy as otherwise they get all soft sitting in the greens all day.

The problem with salad for lunch is that I need A LOT of salad to fill me up as a mean, so I throw on hard boiled eggs, cubed cheese, nuts, raisins etc. to make it as hearty as possible.

Wow $18/pound is NUTS. I used to pick them in Northern Maine with my grandfather when I was a kid. I LOVE them. I've never seen them outside of Maine.

My family usually eats them steamed with butter, but my Mom likes them with a little vinegar (she eats spinach like that, too).

Now I'm skeptical about how well they'll fit my vintage mason jars...

And I want the red! why don't they have that color anymore?

It would be cool if someone made lids like this that closed. Like those bag toppers that have been posted here before, that give plastic bags a snap tight lid. Now that would be useful!

I've had my Chefmate one from Target for years and it's fantastic. I probably paid around $30 for it. You don't have to spend a ton to get a good one!

Oh is that fiddlehead risotto! That sounds *wonderful.* WANT.

I just made risotto for the first time, using my slow cooker and a recipe from the Not Your Mother's Slow Cooker cookbook. I started out the garlic and shallots on the stove, added the rice and wine, and then transferred to the slow cooker with the broth for 2 hours, added pumpkin and sage and cooked it for another 30 minutes. I only stirred it twice-- when I first put it in the slow cooker, and when I added the pumpkin and sage.

It turned out delicious-- as good as any stirred risotto I've ever had. I wish I had stopped cooking it 10 minutes earlier, though, as too much of the liquid got absorbed for my liking. It was like a creamy casserole. I'd make it that way again in a second!

I have an Oxo folding grater that I love! The fold is at the top and it has a nice big easy to hold handle, and it fits flat in my drawer. This doesn't seem as sturdy as that one.

The OVUPUR is so expensive! We have an epic water systems ceramic water filtering crock that was about $200 and we've been using it for 10 years! And their customer service is excellent-- highly recommended!

I made #1 a couple weeks ago and it was great!! Very easy, and it made a yummy week's worth of meals (for 1 person). I used mushrooms and spinach, but you could definitely add nearly anything to it.

@natomaton-- that's my sneaky personal rule, too!

But, really, I don't care about double-dipping. I just don't do it if others will be freaked out.

We're too freakin' germ phobic in the US nowadays. When I was in Japan everyone visiting a temple drank from the same water ladle. No biggie. Even when I went to church here as a kid we all drank from the same communion cup (do they still do that?). No one died.

LOVE LOVE LOVE fruitcake!! If anyone has some they want to give away, send 'em over here!

My dad makes a yummy lemon sauce for fruitcake. We always have that Christmas Eve after dinner.

I always have breakfast-- but I only feel like eating after I've been up and drinking coffee for 2 hours or so. No rolling out of bed and eating for me!

If I'm on campus I'll eat exactly what's in the picture-- a clif bar and a banana or apple.

At home I'll have cereal (I love Trader Joe's Raisin Bran) or an English muffin with peanut butter.

This looks good, but IMHO, leftovers are all about the turkey sandwiches on toasted bread with mayo and pepper. And maybe some stuffing in there, too. I could eat one now, actually.

Oh this is brilliant! I am terrible at eyeballing pasta portions. I always make too much or too little! I'm going to download it for my ipod touch.

And what's up with the cooking snobbery Oneisco? Sorry, but anything that helps people cook is good in my book.

I'm a good cook-- my dad was a chef-- and usually I never use measuring devices when I cook. My dad taught me to eyeball most ingredients. For some reason, pasta alludes me though!
