When my guy is out of town, I stay up until 3 am with all my design and gardening books piled around me in bed. Healthy, scheduled meals go out the window. I eat plain noodles, cereal, and ice cream. And projects get done!

Absolutely. Over the last few months, I've been painting the interior of my new house. So far, the living room is a lovely warm gray with a much softer gray on the ceiling. In the office, I painted the walls a creamy yellow with a pale, pale blue on the ceiling. Both rooms have white crown molding that does a nice job of setting off the colors.

Next up is the kitchen. I'm planning on gray walls with a sunny yellow ceiling. With the white cabinets and soon-to-be soapstone counters, it should be lovely!

I have two Tankers - the nicer one in my office and the beat-up one in the garage that I use for a workbench. I absolutely love the amount of storage in the extra-deep drawers and the gigantic (3'x5') workspace on top.

I have a soft spot for these desks because they remind me of when my dad worked for the Army Corps at a hydroelectric power plant (dam). All the office furnishings were, as I call it, "midcentury government." Benches in the visitors center with olive vinyl cushions and chrome legs. Tanker desks in the offices. Steel lockers for the workmen. Interesting dials and gauges on the wall. Fascinating stuff for a kid and a nice bit of nostalgia when I sit down at my computer each day.

My boyfriend was constantly bringing the bathroom glass into the bedroom to use for water at night. He was very impressed with the glass carafe set I picked up at Homegoods for about $6. I placed the carafe and matching tumbler "lid" on a small white lacquer tray. It protects his newly refinished nightstand from any drips. Inexpensive solution that looks good, too!

Before my boyfriend moved in with me, he lived in a house with his cousin and brother. One day, as he was unloading the dishwasher, I saw the toilet bowl brush in with the dishes. Apparently, his cousin thought that was a great way to get it clean. Needless to say, I avoided meals at his place after that.

In my book, dishwashers are for DISHES.

Please keep in mind that excluding your kids from helping around the house doesn't do them any favors. As a child, a close friend of mine was always shooed away when she tried to help her dad with yardwork. He wanted everything to be done a certain way and didn't want to take the time to teach her. Now, as an adult with a disabled husband and no extra money for professional yard care, she has to do everything on her own, and it's been tough for her, not having any of the skills she could have learned from her dad.

Just let them help. They want to be involved, it builds a sense of accomplishment, and it teaches them skills they will need someday in the adult world.

My dream is to have an entry hall with a black & white marble checkerboard floor. Someday...

In the meantime, for an example of a more upscale version of the checkerboard floor, check out the September issue of House Beautiful. There's a gorgeous floor composed of white marble paired with a blue-ish gray limestone. Absolutely beautiful.

Sorry... not feeling the topsy-turvy plants. I hate these just as much as I hate the upside-down tomato planters I see around town. I drove by a house that had 10 (yes, I counted them) hanging from the eaves. Eek.

Besides, if you plant a houseplant with an upright habit in one of these pots, the stems will likely bend upwards and still grow towards the ceiling.

Elizabeth B - It's actually "Magic Cover" brand contact paper. Lots of places have it; I believe I saw it at Target recently.

My boyfriend's parents have a giant entertainment center blocking one window in their living room, a tall hutch in front of the only window in the dining room, and refrigerator blocking the kitchen window. Seriously.

The room appears in the May issue of Traditional Home. According to the resources, the wall and ceiling are custom by Thomas Blee-Carlyle through Zarin Fabrics (212 925-6112). In the magazine photo, you can see that the walls are not actually a single tone; it almost looks like venetian plaster.

As for the lamps, they are the "Farfalla" at uttermost.com.

The first time I stayed over at my boyfriend's house, I couldn't quite put a finger on what drove me crazy about sleeping in his bedroom. Then, one night, I looked around and counted 7 different sources of glowing light - flashing green lights on the router, freakishly bright blue lights on his PC speakers, red standby lights on the TV & DVD player, etc., etc. Eek!

Now, at our new place, the bedroom is blissfully technology-free. No TV. No computer. Just our cell phones to wake us up in the morning. Bliss.

I moved into a new apartment here in Eugene, Oregon, two months ago. Initially, a lot was happening, but now I feel like I've hit the wall. I'm tired of living with boxes all around, art leaned up against the walls, furniture to be painted sitting on a tarp in the dining area, etc.

Time to cure!

Not a designer piece, but oh-how-I-love my vintage metal barrister bookcase. I had never purchased any furniture costing more than a hundred bucks, but I was living with my mom rent-free while going to school and had a decent job and a few extra dollars in the bank. While browsing a local antiques store, I came across a Globe Wernicke grey metal 4-level stacking barrister bookcase from the 60s. $420 later, it was mine!

Since then, I've seen them selling for a heck of a lot more, but I won't ever get rid of mine. I love how all my design books are protected behind glass and how unbelievably sturdy the dang thing is. Did I mention that it looks incredible? Love!

I'm feeling really lucky right now for inheriting my grandfather's vintage steel cabinet with glass doors & side panels. He was a chemist for a distilling company during much of his career and brought home a locking cabinet from the lab. (It had a broken glass panel.)

It sat in my grandparent's garage for decades, stuffed with gardening supplies. Now it's in my living room, and it looks amazing. I replaced the broken glass panel but didn't do anything to the grey painted finish. It's a little beat-up, but I like the patina and the character it brings to the room. Lucky me...

I have a vintage steel barrister bookcase in my home office. I wanted to cut down on the amount of gray in the room, so I lined the back with a natural-colored grasscloth wallpaper. It's most noticeable behind the shelf I use for display, but it also looks fantastic peeking out from behind books on the other shelves.

Really lightens the look of what could be an oppressively heavy piece...

The best part is that you can't win the makeover unless you live within a 30-mile radius of North Hollywood, but you can win the gift card. Yay! I'd love the $1,500, but there's no way I would let Constance (Color Correction's designer) anywhere near my home.

Just sayin'...

Local nurseries. Many grow their own plants, and they have varieties that the big box stores never get. I have ordered from mail order sources in order to get a rare plant that I can't find locally, but the plants are usually bare-root and quite small. I like to pick the healthiest, most vigorous plant from the nursery.

That being said, if you just want some marigolds or other annual and have a tight budget, you can probably get away with HD or Lowe's. I just don't tend to use a lot of those kinds of plants in my garden. Be careful when buying shrubs or more expensive plants from the chains, though. They are often horribly rootbound and not well tended.

I've seen pallets of plants sitting inside my local HD for days before they are moved outside. Going from 70 degrees to 38 can't be real good for a plant. Same goes for houseplants. I saw a bunch of tropicals sitting outside in the garden center in freezing February before being moved inside. Eek.
