I'm very fond of the design of the home but the landscape could use a few thing to bring the design more in alignment with the character of the building.

The house has some very bold modern moves - translating these into the landscape would have made the design more coherent. Large drifts of native plants in rectalinear arrangements would have helped. The materials palette also stirs feelings of cognitive dissonance - railroad ties and sugar kettles are at odds with the smooth materiality of the building.

I do have to commend the architects on their use of native plant materials. Preserving the tree was also very smart.

Of all the homes I've seen on AT, the interior is probably one of my favorites.

Beautifully done.

Damn kids! When will they learn that ideals don't get you anywhere in this world! Nose to the grindstone, whippersnapper!

I'm going against Frost Tower being animal-inspired - the same architect did Pier One headquarters in Fort Worth and the roof has a very similar assembly. They really like putting glass hats on their buildings.

Emmers, a few of those have been posted on AT before. There's a simple DIY version of this on the front page right now.

While they probably get pricey as they get taller, these are very clean and very architectural cat products for the home. I'd wager they make much less mess than the Kittypod.

I've got two grey cats, one a British Blue hybrid (like the above), the other a Russian Blue hybrid. They are the perfect modern home accessories, minus the furniture scratching :/

Google "Hither Lane" and it pops right up. It's featured on Reed Hilderbrand's website.

Snipet is correct, I forgot about Barragan. Hither Lane is one of the first high profile residences I saw it in.

I've been looking for a steam iron for some time as I have no skill with a flat iron. This would make my life much easier!

This detail was actually first done by Reed Hilderbrand and Associates at Hither Lane, a landmark modernist residence from the late 90s. The RH detail is much cleaner because the stakes are stainless (galvanized?) and come out of lawn in a sinuous pattern, avoiding the somewhat ungainly detailing at the pavement.

And as far as impaling goes - those stakes are most likely 42" high. What are you going to do, fall off of a ladder? Those pickets would probably do LESS damage than the sharp edges of a chain link fence that you fell on.

I raved and raved about softpaws... until my Russian Blue got a soft paw stuck in the pile of the bathroom carpet. She cried and cried, then cried harder when I tried to get her out of the fix.

I eventually had to cut her out of the rug with an X-Acto knife. I think it was more traumatic for me than it was for her. No more soft paws for my cats now.

The last time I was down for the LARE exam I drove through a bunch of neighborhoods and took photos of all the simple, modern homes that were cropping up. My favorite was just featured in last month's Dwell.

Almost makes me sad I left Texas. Almost.

You guys missed the best one! It's a bit pricey but is made of teak and stainless, so it will last a long time.

As an added note, wildflowers are annuals and need to be planted with native grass mixes to prevent bare earth for extended periods. Most native seed providers offer wildflower/grass mixes for a variety of site conditions. Native American Seed Company is a great source (www.nativeamericanseed.com)
