In Japan they used to burn the clapboard similar to the above mentioned technique to protect them from the elements and from burning. I read about it in Dwell magazine and just found the following link: http://pursuingwabi.com/2007/11/05/shou-sugi-ban/

Looks great!...I'm always one of those fortunate ones that seldom finds the great clearance deals like those you mention.

I totally dig that foldable drafting table! Wonder if they make things like that anymore?

Funny how many are vexed that Americans don't have electric kettles. Well most of us don't drink as much tea as the Brits, Aussies, and Kiwis. I, however, drink lots of tea and I've considered an electric kettle, but after what many have said on their rather short lifetimes I'll forgo it and stick to the stove-top one I've had for 10+years.

Power switches on outlets seem like a good idea and I'm sure they can be had here.

I think the most wasteful thing we have here in the US are cars. Public transit is limited outside the large urban areas. Suburbs require them as they're not built for pedestrians. *sigh*

Funny how some have a knack of changing the most mundane objects into veritable objets d'art.

My house has a fireplace and I never use it. Just seems like too much work. Not to mention I'm liable to throw everything into the flames if I were to use it. :-/

The label on the can of Tourangelle indicates it's expeller-pressed. It's in fine print toward the very bottom of it.

Ugh, I'm still living with my paint mistake. My prob, I think, is the finish and not the color per se but which is affected by it nonetheless. I'll def be repainting in no time at all.

I have a ton of Queen Anne's lace in my garden. It's just taken over. UGH! I also have plenty of milkweed, which I dig. I want lots of monarchs fluttering about my garden. Although I do need to expand my mound of wildflowers. Looks nice and less maintenance.

Do tell us the paint you used. Lately I've been on a "green" tear. My living room has one green wall and the bedroom is going a retro avo. I think the 2nd bedroom is going robin egg blue to go with the chocolate colored shades.

I was in Windsor, ON this past w/e and they too are having a municipal strike. There was not garbage collection or lawn mowing nor were they handing out parking tickets. :-)

I use one of those lint removers that resemble crushed velvet. They seem to work really well at picking up the wooly fur of a long-haired cat.

I'm making mom's old standby of meatballs in tomato chipotle sauce. I use turkey instead of beef, though.

Last year, summer, I noticed that I had an ant problem in my kitchen. My sister sent me some little baits, but that didn't help much. I decided to do some online research and found that ants follow a scent left by one of their trailblazers. You have to throw their scent trail off so they get disoriented and thus don't return. Ground cinnamon is what I sprinkled all over my baseboards, and lo and behold no more ants. I've not seen one since, and the best part is that cinnamon smells good and is "all natural".

I agree that at this point it's status symbol. It'd would also be a better use of limited resources to have a large install of windmills/other green power generation eqpmt that could supply a large no. of people instead of one household.
