I don't think this is the company that makes that bookcase. However, in Valpo, Indiana there is a company that specializes in whimsical creations. I've never bought as they're a bit pricey but cool nonetheless. http://www.dustfurniture.com

I agree, many seem romanticize small-town living. Sarah certainly does a good job of enumerating her reasons and doesn't omit some of the workarounds or drawbacks of this lifestyle. I don't necessarily believe it's for everyone. I have always lived in a large city and just the sheer number and variety of people that I encounter on a daily basis makes it interesting. Shopping for me isn't too much of a concern so small shop, big boxes, meh. They all have their pluses, minuses and all can be found in a large city. However, I love the myriad methods of transit available to me. Having commuter rail, subways, buses, bikes, cabs, and cars (in that order) available certainly makes it easier getting around and less reliant on the oil companies, others, and the vagaries of weather.

Sara O., try Prairie Moon Nursery. They sell online. I bought some native Midwestern cactus from them. I keep it in a pot outside year round. It grows slowly and gives beautiful yellow flowers this time of year.

In Japan they used to burn the clapboard similar to the above mentioned technique to protect them from the elements and from burning. I read about it in Dwell magazine and just found the following link: http://pursuingwabi.com/2007/11/05/shou-sugi-ban/

I totally dig that foldable drafting table! Wonder if they make things like that anymore?

Funny how many are vexed that Americans don't have electric kettles. Well most of us don't drink as much tea as the Brits, Aussies, and Kiwis. I, however, drink lots of tea and I've considered an electric kettle, but after what many have said on their rather short lifetimes I'll forgo it and stick to the stove-top one I've had for 10+years.

Power switches on outlets seem like a good idea and I'm sure they can be had here.

I think the most wasteful thing we have here in the US are cars. Public transit is limited outside the large urban areas. Suburbs require them as they're not built for pedestrians. *sigh*

My house has a fireplace and I never use it. Just seems like too much work. Not to mention I'm liable to throw everything into the flames if I were to use it. :-/

Ugh, I'm still living with my paint mistake. My prob, I think, is the finish and not the color per se but which is affected by it nonetheless. I'll def be repainting in no time at all.

I have a ton of Queen Anne's lace in my garden. It's just taken over. UGH! I also have plenty of milkweed, which I dig. I want lots of monarchs fluttering about my garden. Although I do need to expand my mound of wildflowers. Looks nice and less maintenance.

Do tell us the paint you used. Lately I've been on a "green" tear. My living room has one green wall and the bedroom is going a retro avo. I think the 2nd bedroom is going robin egg blue to go with the chocolate colored shades.

I use one of those lint removers that resemble crushed velvet. They seem to work really well at picking up the wooly fur of a long-haired cat.
