I think the thing I most missed when I left Chicago was the seasons here. Even the crappiest and most bleak part of winter (which we finally just passed -- I hope) isn't so bad when you think about last Friday, when everything warmed up and it seemed like everyone was happy and glad to be alive. You just don't feel renewed like that when it is always temperate and every month just seems to blend into the next.

And as a side note, there's much worse weather in Madison and much more sinister panhandling in SF. And my house (which in fairness is barely in the city limits) is about a three minute walk from the forest preserve.

i'm also very well-equipped for this one. i have two beagles (one who seems just extra fluffy and soft, but then that means also extra sheddy) plus usually one foster beagle. they have a beagle-proof room which is covered wall to wall in flor tiles. we got these actually through lowe's, which has fewer "cool" looking ones, but they are a lot cheaper this way, both because you can get 20% off when they run sales on special order carpet and you do not have to pay the shipping cost that flor charges direct. these have been a godsend -- the hair vacuums up like a charm (and they're black and you can see the hair VERY well) and any accidents or spitup, etc. just result in me picking up the tile and washing it in the sink with a little dish detergent. i also have the fancier flor tiles in the bedroom for an area rug and a chilewich mat in the living room, which has also been fantastic and very easy to keep clean.

those look like merillat cabinets to me, but as long as they're not a funky brand, i think you can probably look around in the cabinets, find the maker for this type of cabinet. check the drawers -- they probably say on the sides if they are merillat. if they are easy to source, you can very easily purchase new doors for all of the upper, country-fied doors to match the square lower cabinet pattern. then get some hardware that's a little more modern and i think you will be much happier.

dogs not on the furniture is not even a consideration for us. we just use a quilt that we place over the sofa. wash it frequently and your couch will stay fresh smelling and clean and it will keep the hair off. it's easier to take on and off too than a slipcover. we still vacuum the couch every so often to get the hairs that slip through, but it has been the best and least ugly solution we've found so far.

we did something sort of similar -- light gray walls, white trim, painted the risers black and put down black and gray flor stair runner

the piano is made of wood for a reason and the last thing i would ever do is to paint a wooden musical instrument. you may not be in love with this piano, but by painting with a giant latex skin you could kill or curtail whatever ability to transmit sound that the shell has. i would seek some advice from a real piano expert before undertaking anything like this.

are these actually made from old circuit boards? if so, aren't there a lot of toxic chemicals in a lot of circuit boards, which i thought was part of the reason why a lot of computer/chip manufacturing went to countries with not very strict regulation on chemical disposal and use.

art -- i don't know what kind of light any of those fixtures throw, but i sort of like the flexibility of the spots since once you hang a ceiling fixture, especially in a kitchen setting, you discover dark corners, etc. that you wish were illuminated a little better. it may not be the most sleek of the ones you are looking at, but i think it will be the most flexible and give you the best lighting options. plus i think it might also not look as dated as the others might in 5 years when some other trend has taken hold in lighting.

Art: this took me forever to re-find on the internet, but I had this place, Pease Plastics, make some thin bent plexi inserts for my record shelves so our adorable stinker of a beagle couldn't pull my husband's collection off the shelves while we weren't home.

They came out great but weren't cheap...

i've never sat in either, but i'd venture to guess the comfort level depends on the size of the person. for some reason, eames' chairs fit me extremely well (i'm a pretty small person). recently one of my tall friends sat in an LCW and looked SO uncomfortable but this is probably one of the most comfortable chairs for me.

re the bar area now with cabinets: I did something similar in my house and did not extend the backsplash. I felt like a backsplash was unnecessary for an area that was going to see little water and some food prep but more as a holding area.

We constantly get phone calls from Amvets and some other similar nonprofit donation pickup service and rarely have anything to donate. But when they called last a few weeks ago, they offered a pickup this Friday and we went for it. It was great timing -- we had some extra time to clean out our closet and drawers this weekend for the pickup and now have room for some of the new things we got at Christmas as well as some much needed extra space.

yeah, that's a great price on a boos.

another good option: we got ours as a floor model that williams sonoma was trying to get rid of for about 1/3 price that it retails for. we just sanded the top a little to clean it up and polished the stainless legs and shelf.

if you're lucky you only have one set's worth of carpet staples. i've pulled up carpet a number of times and the last time we had ancient staples (complete with wool pad bits still attached) and newer staples to contend with!

i think i have that same orange behr paint in my bathroom.

and i found that behr works very well for me. years later i've touched up spots and it really still blends perfectly.
