Consider taking methods from permaculture gardening, by planting native flowering plants in the plot. This will make habitat for a slew of insects and animals.

Before planting anything edible, have the soil tested. Most state health departments will do it for you for a nominal fee (just tell them it's from your yard rather than a deserted lot).

Also, consider container gardening - safer than raised beds, because even with raised beds, the roots will grow down into the native soil.

If you find out the soil is contaminated with a specific element (such as mercury, lead, or arsenic), consider doing some bioremediation. A lot of plants will actually take up these toxins naturally (some transpire the toxins, some store it in their biomass), and if you're vested in improving a piece of land guerilla style, this would be a definite way to help out.

AA targets a young demographic. If you're offended by their ad campaigns it may just be that you're not in their demographic...
This is a clothing line that yes, specifically wants to make people feel sexy. Is that really perverted? It's fashion.

And so what if illegal immigrants are being hired? This country is run on the backs of illegal immigrants, and if AA is trying to hire them and give them a living wage, so what?

They have a great cotton blend, the sheets will be comfy, and the colors are minimalist chic - which is what most people look for in bedding, right?
It's a good product.

I used to live next to a maxwell house plant. For some reason, the smell of their coffee always reminded me of turkey lunch meat. Really gross.
Luckily, the smell only came during certain hours of the day/year depending on wind patterns. Only thing to do was keep all the windows closed and tightly sealed.

My grandfather grew up in a desert wasteland during the great depression. Everything that came down the arroyo during the rainy season was kept and used - to the point where houses were built with the driftwood. As a result of this survival behavior he had, my mother holds on to everything and rarely will throw things away - including mcdonalds packets.
This is something that people do when they've been raised in poverty. It is not OCD, because honestly, if it were, she'd have other symptoms beyond simply hoarding.
Don't know if that applies to your wife, but keep your mind open to why she might be compelled to hold on to things, and try to get her to figure it out for herself as well. Recommending going to a counselor or psychologist is insulting. Period. She can figure things out on her own and you can help her figure things out. It will strengthen your relationship in the long run.

So, is that backsplash just a piece of linoleum covering the black and yellow tiles? If so, just rip it out. Those tiles have a nice art deco design, and if you paint the walls above them an even whiter white (is that possible?), it would pop really nice. Think about taking the cabinet doors off on top to open the room more. And roman shades are super cheap at target. That fridge is massive. Maybe try to find a smaller one you can trade for on craigslist?

Personally, I really like the pine cabinets. Don't paint them unless you have to...

The floors... finding cheap flooring options is hard. I would say rip out the linoleum and go with the cement/wood base.

Agreed. $300 - $1000 is not expensive for original work.
You buy chairs for $300 - $1000, right?

Think about it. You can hang them like you hang coffee mugs under cabinets.

At the very least comical, but maybe it has potential in the right hands.

Poured concrete stools...that you will never be able to move once they're poured. Message? Make sure you pour them exactly where you want them.

Ground almonds and flax seeds mixed with a hint of pumice powder. Reconstitute with a few drops of water and scrub away. Leaves a nice layer of almond/flax oil on the skin.

I second the call for roman blinds. Target sells them for $24 in nice natural shades that would match the room well.

I don't know the show, but what I'm seeing in these photos are mature native plants being replaced by young boxwoods???
How is that a good landscaping solution?

The problem with all wall planters (as far as I can tell) is that they don't give enough room for root development. Eventually, the plants will suffocate themselves as they become root bound.
So, it seems like you'd have to replant quite often.
Depends on the plants of course. Thyme, for example, would probably work well here. As would succulents... but that's not edible.
Any gardeners have suggestions for plant choices?

I made a bed the same size with 3 planks of wood and a few L brackets for under $40. Duh.

The chairs give me a feeling like I have ants in my pants - which I guess could be seen as good pomo design. And now that I'm thinking about it that way...I sort of like them.

If you're moving in less than a year, you probably shouldn't buy anything... unless you know you'll use it in your next place.

Most companies these days are not asking for $ for credit checks, since you can do it free online now.

And to fight about $75 - you have to make a decision, are you going to stand up for what you think is ethical, or are you going to pay the fee. It is unethical and greedy for them to be asking for the $, but it is standard practice, and fighting about it will not end up with them saying, "no problem, you don't have to pay!"

But, in the long run, when there's a landlord that is adding on fees like that, it will eventually accumulate. I've definitely been in situations where landlords have added on hundreds of dollars of fees over a year for little things that were really uncalled for - like dropping my keys down the elevator shaft. Ugh. Landlords.

I've seen decorative pedestals similar to these used for planters and like lyndafitz suggested, ornamental balls (usually not glass but matching the pedestals).

If you can't find a planter to fit on each properly (because it would be hard to find one to match), I second putting a bowl in them - glass WOULD look great - and using them as bulb forcers.
