I hate denying my cat the chance to go outside, but the reality is that for her own safety, she needs to be an indoor cat. She's entirely too trusting and I'm afraid she'd just trust that a car or a dog wouldn't hurt her. Plus we have ticks and tons of mosquitos, both of which can carry diseases that can be deadly to cats, and we've seen a fox prowling our neighborhood.

We let her out on the screened in porch occasionally, but only when we're out there with her. I wish we could give her freedom to roam outside, but I can't do it in good conscience. If something happened to her, I'd be sick about it.

I love okra! The easiest way to prepare it is to slice it in half length-wise, drizzle with olive oil, salt and pepper and put on a cookie sheet in a 400 degree oven for 20 min. Right before they're done, take them out and sprinkle with grated parmesan cheese. They're done when the slime is gone and they're slightly crispy like french fries.

Where does one get those? I love them!

I've coveted this table ever since I saw it in domino magazine back in 2007. Room and Board had a round table with similar proportions and a carved wood base that was GORGEOUS, but it appears that they no longer have it on their site. Phooey. Every other round table I see is either a Saarinen, which won't work for my style, or it has four legs. The search continues.

We use ours pretty often, especially if we're making a spaghetti sauce from scratch. I'd so there's no reason to waste the money on a W-S version. We got ours from the restaurant supply store for less than $5, I'm pretty sure. Any other "big box" type store will also have them cheap.

I also like the idea of floating shelves and painting the walls.

A few other ideas (I haven't read through all of the responses, so I apologize if people have already suggested these ideas): 1) I'd switch out the light fixture and 2) I'd install a simple window treatment like a roman shade or bamboo shade.

I also like the idea of a stainless steel stove hood, but that might be more than what you're willing to spend/do. I also like the idea of topiaries or herbs in the window for a quick, easy, and cheap way to add some more interest.

I had a great week this week!

We finished painting our bedroom. I had decided that we needed less color--our bedroom had been turquoise and I found it was too stimulating and not relaxing enough. So we painted it a very neutral taupe-y color that's warm and inviting.

I kept up with the decluttering--I got rid of a huge stack of Real Simple Magazines, Elle Decor magazines, old beach towels, kitchen stuff, and miscellaneous household stuff. It's so nice to be rid of it! My husband is starting to get into the swing of things too--he's a bit of a sentimental pack-rat, but he's been adding things to the outbox--I'm very proud of him. :)

Apartment Therapy New York | NY Spring Cure: Week Four - Weekend
4/6/08 11:25 AM

It's been a busy week at my house.

I bought a hanging organizer for all the gift wrap that has been hanging out in the back of the closet forever. So the gift wrap is now all organized and lovely.

I cleaned out our medicine/linen cabinet in the hallway, purging expired medicines, getting rid of old yucky candles, and old beach towels that we no longer use.

I've also put all my old magazines in the outbox. I'll go through them over the course of the week and pull out any articles/pictures that I want to keep then recycle the magazines.

I also started painting our bedroom. The old turquoise color was just too much contrast in that room and it made me feel jittery instead of relaxed. I'll finish painting next week.

I'll post more pics soon.

I'm going great guns!

We completely remodeled our kitchen this past fall/winter, so there isn't a whole lot that needs to be done there. (If you're interested, you can see my slideshow here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/74041096@N00/sets/72157604173627122/show/) I cleaned the refrigerator out and I cleaned all the shelves in it and it looks great!

The one remaining thing we have left to do in our kitchen is to paint the old cabinet doors to go in the pantry. I stripped them all yesterday and put the first coat of paint on today. I'll finish painting them tomorrow and we'll install them tomorrow afternoon. I'm counting this as one of the things I'm fixing this week.

I've also been decluttering a ton and I've picked out paint colors for the bedroom, since I'm over the teal color that we painted it a few years ago. I also patched up some holes and imperfections in the drywall in preparation for painting sometime soon. I also bought a pretty quilt for the bedroom and I'm very happy with it.

I'll be blogging about more of this at: http://ihavetohaveit.blogspot.com

So far, so good for me!

Yesterday I dusted, vacuumed, and used my Omop to clean the floors. I even moved the couch cushions and vacuumed under them. (Gross!)

I got rid of an old stereo system that we just didn't use any more and a bunch of other stuff. I had also cleaned out my closet a few months ago and had bags of clothes sitting in the office and ready to go to Goodwill, but I just hadn't taken them yet. So I took all of it in yesterday and it's great to reclaim that lost floor space and closet space!

This afternoon I'm going to finish reupholstering a chair that I've been working on for a month. I'll post pictures when I'm done.

I also loved this book. It's totally inspired me to buy more locally. In fact, my husband and I went to our state's farmers' market today and got some locally raised pork and beef. *shudders with excitement*

You've just inspired me to purge my medicine cabinet when I go home this afternoon.

We just got new cabinets in our kitchen and I made the cabinet above the fridge 24" deep instead of the standard 12"--that way I can store the liquor bottles and other odds and ends in the cabinet instead of having it on full view. Plus, I can reach the cabinet doors now without having to get a step stool out.

• How to hunt for bargains: I think I missed that lesson entirely.
• How to choose colors: To some degree, my mom, but mostly from home magazines
• How to rescue old furniture: Mom and my dad
• How to sew: Mom
• How to make compromises in decorating: My husband.
• How to like doing the dishes: I don't.
• How to cook: My mom taught me how to follow recipes. My other cooking skills come from a mixture of being self-taught, and learning through Jamie Oliver and my husband.

I'll add another one because I think it's important to my life:
Both of my parents had an incredible "can-do" attitude with regards to home remodeling and decorating. That attitude has 100% rubbed off on me and now I try to do everything I can myself.

Whose home tour is that? I'd love to look through the whole place, but don't have the time to look through all of the links right now.

The website is pretty difficult to look at--visually it's cluttered, which makes it hard to find what you're looking for.

The funny thing is, when I clicked on the different styles they feature ("Urban Nest," "Artists' Community," "World Traveller," etc.), they all look more or less the same to me.

This stuff is the best, hands down. My mom used it when I was a kid, and now it's in my closet of cleaning supplies.

My husband and I have far more pictures of food on our hard drive than we have of each other or anyone else. We don't have pets or kids, so that's what we take pictures of! And yes, it's disturbing.

What a bummer you have to move now! Hopefully you can recreate the look in this apartment in your next place.

Like some of the others, you've inspired me to go home and purge some stuff today. Although your style is a bit different than mine (I'm a bit of a slob with eclectic taste, which tends to mean clutter! everywhere!) you've given me some great ideas and I'm definitely bookmarking this house tour. I love the soft color palette and the resulting warmth it casts.

Thanks for sharing your home!
