Happy birthday, Hank. This has been the best year of my life so far.

Love, Poppa.

PS Hope you Google this page in the future and find this message.

Thanks for the comments and the post, ATLA. It should also be noted that this lamp was designed for a conceptual design exhibition in Chicago called Deceptive Design. The central theme of this exhibition was "to push the envelope of our common conceptions of furniture and furnishings and explore new roles for design to take on." This piece was designed around the concept of visual deception-- riffing off of the iconography of the domestic table lamp. If you're interested in the piece, please join my mailing list-- it will be available in early 2009!

Before posting terms like "knock off wishlist", you should really consider your professional ethics within the field of design. Many factors go into the pricing of a product, and companies that invest in innovation, research, and quite frankly-- original design-- will have more expensive products. You can either save up or find alternatives, but to suggest a knock off is just insulting to the design field to which you blog about.

Why own a toaster when we all have oven/broilers? Let's reduce, people.

The space is really well done, but even more striking is the overall attention to detail in the design of the total experience. The Violet Hour is definitely taking the lounge concept into fresh territory for Chicago.

Thanks again for all the praise, it's honestly flattering.

Bikes: I'm surprised that photo was included, but also think it speaks a lot to who we are as a couple. We have been car-less for over three years, and we take pride in that fact. Having our bikes in the back hallway speaks to that priority in our life.

Lamp cord: It's really very easy to wire the lamp up yourself, provided you have an old ceiling fixture that's pre-wired. We removed a ceiling fan and within a few minutes had the new lamp wired up.

Salt and pepper sets: They are slowly heading towards production... unfortunately I do not have my own studio, so I have to rely on a very generous friend for his time and expertise in ceramics, so getting a large batch produced is somewhat difficult. Stay tuned-- I really want to see them in stores by the winter.

Thanks for all the nice words, everyone!

Answers to your questions:

Our Room&Board Andre sofa is less than a year old-- our previous Room&Board couch was having problems, but R&B has an amazing warranty policy that refunded us the original purchase price to put towards a new sofa. We rotate our cushions often, hopefully this will keep it pleasurably plump.

The flooring is classified as "engineered wood", which means it's a 1/8 inch layer of hardwood over top of plywood. We did not pick it, it was standard for the rehab.

I'm flattered Kornbread, but Emily may have some thoughts on that...

The red pendant lamp still has the white cord (which I actually like) but I chopped off the outlet plug and hardwired it into the ceiling.

The bedroom decals are from Emily's favorite-- Blik.

Thanks for the warning on the appliances, Nattles. Although shrouded in stainless steel, it's become apparent to us that these are fairly basic appliances. They have served us well so far (fingers crossed) and since Emily is a such an active chef, we would surely starve without them.

Thanks all.

Unfortunately, no Andy. I wish that IKEA had bought the design from Aye&Berman, but they either hijacked us via the web (probably not), or we just ride the same design wavelength (most likely). But damn, the leg proportions are quite similar.

I like it, but man is that ever a rip-off of combination of designer lamps... think Flos, Plusminuszero, etc etc

Yeah, Charles Eames was born and bred in the midwest, but Ray & Charles didn't do their most iconic and important work until they were in California.

I just love the time stamp wallpaper that you seem to have in the bottom left corner of every room!

Cheers to Morlen Sinoway for organizing such an awesome event! It's good to see Chicago design coming together as a community-- I'd like to see more designers/makers exhibiting in this town...

Wow, park space is directly proportional to lameness of the city. Interesting.
