"Surely they have other more important things to worry about than the trashcan so I would have totally postponed."

This is what I mean by judge-y. EVERYONE has more important things to worry about than getting their home photographed for a website. And not everyone considers every single detail that the internet scolds will jump on.

OMG. Really? People are judging the father for not staying constantly in the NICU with a baby who is under constant 24-hour care of experienced neonatologists and nurses? Did you miss the part about the couple having TWO OTHER KIDS who are presumably at home with someone while they are visiting the twin in the NICU?

My first child was a preemie and had to stay in the NICU for three weeks. We did not--could not--spend every minute in the hospital. Neither did any of the other parents whose kids were there during that time. But we were all loving, devoted parents who pumped and transported breast milk and fed our babies through gavage tubes and sat beside their bassinets for hours and relished every time we were allowed to have skin-to-skin contact with them. Some of the parents had to drive 60 miles or more EACH WAY to the hospital and then return home to other kids, dogs, jobs, and so on. As far as I know all of our kids turned out fine.

The judginess on this site really astonishes me sometimes.

They're cute, the dog's cute, the apartment is cute! One thing, though--I think some of the art is hung way too high (especially the pieces over the LR couch). I think the space would look so much more connected if they brought it down so it "relates" to the couch rather than the middle of the wall. Just my opinion. :)

So cute. We have done vouchers for years in our family (but we call them "vouSHAYS" to sound fancy). My daughter did a whole book of hand-illustrated ones when she was about 10 that is so sweet I can't bear to tear any of them out.

^I'm sure the parents will make changes when the baby gets mobile. They have time.

This is a lovely place and you have great taste. The kitchen is wonderful.

Fearless and fun. Love the bright colors...they totally make sense the way you've used them.

Wow, how brave to post your "before." I can't imagine how thrilled you are with the improvements you've made. The craftsmanship is beautiful.

It does seem that you like your "stuff," and the only thing I might have done differently is to close up more of the kitchen cabinetry to hide all the small objects.

Beautiful. Are the kitchen cabinets IKEA? If not they look exactly like mine...which are. :)

I get that the woodwork was chipped, but I loved the original dark tones against the white walls and probably would have tried to recreate them when I painted the trim. Beautiful place, though.

Adorable house, and I have a really similar kitchen. Those bathroom sinks (with no counters!) would drive me crazy, though.

Where I live we would call this an International-style house. It's beautiful.

I LOVE my IKEA kitchen. We had a small, awkward space to work with and IKEA products are perfect for situations like mine. The fittings make use of two previously dead corners--one with a lazy susan, one with this amazing bi-level shelf thing that pulls out from the dead space--and as a result I am now able to maximize every inch of space. I love the pantry unit, as well as the butcher block counters and sink with drain board. I just did my powder room with a similar model cabinet and I love it too.

I love how "undesigned" this looks, even though the owner is a decorator. It's warm and friendly and real.

Love the bedroom, bathroom, and the varnished plywood floor. Not sure I could live in it, but it seems to work for them.

They could make a fortune renting it out for parties or location shoots.

I certainly hope everyone who is harping on the history of this house and everything in it spends some time this weekend taking a good long look at their own possessions. Read a few labels on your clothes or look at where and under what conditions your electronics and appliances were made. Do some research into the origins of your wood furniture and the practices used to make it. Have a few oriental rugs on the floors? You might want to think twice about displaying them, as the rug factories in Asia are notorious for exploiting young children as indentured servants or outright slaves. Also, if you go out to dinner tonight please ask your server how much he or she is getting paid and whether the employer treats the staff fairly. And then make sure you do something about all the unpleasant things you uncover, so you can feel even more justified in your criticism of entire cultures.
