If you have illustrator, you can layout the type yourself and send to a sign company to output. I have used Toll Graphics - now in emeryville for vinyl rub down letters in the past. The size of the output is limited and will need to be broken down in sections to fit. If you call and talk to them they can give you specs for output. If you install yourself - make extra sets of common letters, sometimes edges get lifted if not rubbed down right and will need to be replaced.
A less complicated option would be to have it digitally printed on canvas, background color can match wall if you want to blend.

Its an exterior grade product, mold or rust shouldn't be a problem if installed correctly. Ideally an assembly of a waterproof membrane and pressure treated nailing strips with self sealing washer head screws would work.
The first installation looks problematic, but the second one
looks like some thought was put into the installation.

I've done several school projects, and dark grout is the preference. It's funny to see comments about it looking institutional.
If you look at most public restrooms, at your favorite high end restaurant, and you will see that the grout is darker than the tile. It's just a maintenance thing, but when you pick the right color, becomes the right accent.

Looks great but they can't be sealed right. We have on in the office and air slips through in the cold season and you bake during the summer.
Nanawall is a more practical solution for homes, they are made for conditioned spaces.
They did use http://www.bifold.com/ aircraft hanger doors on a leed project at stanford, it may be a better option for if you want that industrial look. you can see it at:

That’s funny you mention "Howl's Moving Castle". They park this thing in Oakeyville (Oakland, Berkeley, Emeryville Area) at an artist run compound. I had just watched "Howl's Moving Castle" with the kids when we stumbled upon this on a bike ride. As we peeked in at the gate, a very nice woman invited us in and gave us a tour.
When my sharp eyed daughter spotted the artist in the framed photograph shown in the last image, it took the artist by surprise.
The image looks vintage and the people are dressed in Victorian clothes, so after we left my daughter asked my if they could travel back in time in that moving castle.

Consider your room light source. I painted the walls in our loft BM Sea Froth (2107-60). this warm gray on the brown side worked well with the light blue I used for the kitchen and darker brown gray (Smoked oyster 2109-40) I was using for an accent wall. Sea Froth is so light that it absorbs the colors of the light that comes through our west facing windows. In the morning when we get reflected light the color seams cooler. In the afternoon and under incandescent lights it looks just like the sample color. In the evening with the orange and pink tones the color looks pink.
I was quite alarmed the first day i noticed the color change, but have grown to enjoy the shifting shades as part of the cycle of the day.

If it is just the color and not the quality of paint you are after, I found out that Home Depot can mix BM colors.
Just by accident I had my BM color book with me and was trying to find the closest thing in one of the Home Depot paints, and the sales person told me they could actually mix the color I needed from my BM swatch book.
That said, BM paints do cover better and the new Zero VOC paints have no odor.

I think these are great. As a photographer that is constantly juxtaposing images on my walls, this system sure beats my old method of spray mounting the image to gator board and cutting the outer ¼” of the backing away so the images appear to float. Sounds laborious, but when you are used to wielding an x-acto it’s not that hard.
For the people posting comments about their precious photos, unless you are using special glass and archival matt board and paper backings, scan your old photos and frame the copies. I have most of the old photos from my family, and the originals are in a fire safe box and not on my wall.
I can’t wait to get a couple of sets of these hangers.

I agree that using forbo would be the easiest, but I would go with a sheet for the stripes and a tile for the squares. Several forbo lines have both sheet goods and tiles.

The pattern is just a series of stripes with squares inlaid, but the inlaid pattern shifts between rows. The stripes would have to equal half the diagonal of the square.

I work in affordable housing in SF, our projects have always get design awards. Trust me, giving people who normally do not have access to good design an interesting project, they will appreciate it. It is mostly the younger residents that find the details we slave over "cool".
The thing I didn't like about this show, based on the 3rd episode, is that local residence cant afford to buy these houses. They should try and work along the Rural Studio mode of providing housing for poor and low income people or make a more modest residence that could be affordable to local residence.
I don't know how the series ends and who gets into these houses, but based on episode 3, it looks like they need some more community outreach and studies.

I liked the yagi design office stair: http://www.apartmenttherapy.com/sf/inspiration/pantone-stairs-at-tamotsu-yagi-design-055865

If you only paint the risers, then you don't see anything as you enter - no impact until you leave. If you alternated the tread and risers, it would be something you could see upon entering one way and another as you exit.

We use it all the time in corridors for institutional projects and some multi-family housing. With a good coat of industrial wax it will hold up well. You will need to buff it and recoat now an then depending upon the use. As for DIY only the residential click flooring the sheet goods needs to be rolled and seamed with a integral color weld strip - even the pro's mess this up.

I've been to the office several times, and the space is great.
Large white walls with reclaimed wood floors. The exposed wood ceiling structure was sandblasted. Tamotsu also has a great collection of vintage modern furniture in his office.

I have used cork from a company called forbo in similar installations. It comes in rolls about 5' wide by several yards long. I didn't see it on their website, but I specified it on a recent project and we had it installed, so I assume it exist.
Contractors have substituted material from another company called claridge http://www.claridgeproducts.com/arch_tack_bulletin_claridge_cork.html
The colors are not ad nice as forbo's, but the material is just as good and comes in the same size.
Seams are tuff if you don't know what you are doing and installing along the length of the roll. Seam along the manufacturers edge if possible.

Oh yea – most artist and art collectives have been gentrified from the city and have moved across the bay to Oak-town. If you are willing to cross the great divide, there is a network of galleries and alternative exhibit spaces worth visiting:

I agree with Amy - check with local art schools. I have helped several people get some nice work at the student fairs, auctions and shows.
Also check local Open Studio Tours – SF has theirs in November. Somarts cultural center has pieces by most artist participating so you can see who’s work you may be interested in and visit the studio.
